What type of rear is this?

I know im a noob. What type of rear end do I have? Unsure what work if any the previous owners did. It's on my 88 yj. However I can't tell if it's a D35 or D44....

you go by the cover usually, unless its a custom cover and you cant tell what type it is, i believe both of yours are dana 44

edit:actually i take that back lol could be a 30 going by the outline of the bolts

Factory axles on a yj would be 35 rear 30 front. The rear in your photo looks like a 35 (and it look crusty enough to be orginal). Also look for the CAD setup on the longside tube of the front axle... should have vacum lines running to it, that'll also clear up what front you have.

You have a D30 front axle and 35 rear. Your front 30 on the yj's and tj's are actually stronger than the earlier cj 30's. They have bigger u-joint in them. the shafts may even be bigger but not positive about that. I have to be honest with you, I have read and heard bad things about the 35 rear, BUT my dad and my brother both have had yj's with the 35 and my brothers were all lifted with 32's and 33's being the largest tires he ran and NEVER had problems out of it, and we did some pretty rough trails. So I really wouldn't worry to much about the 35 unless you are doing some really tough stuff with some huge tires and a heavy foot. Oh, just a fyI. Dont know if you got a 4 or 6 cylinder but All four cylinder's got 4.10 gears.

It's a 6 cyl. Not sure what gears are in it but if I wanted to put new gears in it what should I go with for 32 or 33 in tires??

It's a Dana35 rear and Dana30 front. If you have the 6cyl and 5spd transmission you have the 3.07 gear ratio. For 33" tires you want 4.11 or 4.56 gears.

To correct an earlier post, the 2.5L Wrangler came with 4.10 gears behind the 5spd and 3.73 gears behind the auto.

Your d35 rear axle is the earlier non c-clip design, slightly stronger than the later c-clip version. Only upgrade I would do is Regear for the 33" tires.

the 6 cylinder auto had 3.07s also so you are probably totally stock. when you are on the highway, doing 65, what is your rpms?
