The trans bolted to a 2.8 V6 will last about 15 seconds behind a V8 (after teh first couple clutch drops, the input shaft will twist off) You're better off with a bigger V6 that will bolt to that trans or a motor/trans combo. Some CJs with the early 2.5L and 904 auto had the same bolt pattern as Chev small block. I think late '79 to '83?
Then the Chev 4 cyl motor got the same pattern as the 2.8 V6 and AMC 4 cyl. If you were close to Seattle, I have an '87 Chev Celebrity wagon with 2.8 (later model crate engine with wider bearings and internally balanced) and EFI for $300.
I sat in the car last week and I've been sick with sinusitis from the mold in the car ever since. My son has almost $800 into it and I just want it gone!
