Winch opinions

Im looking to buying a winch for my 05 rubicon. Any input of favorites or ones to stay away from? Electric or hydraulic? What rating? Overkill is usually nice but I dont care to spend more than I have too and dont need to take up the whole grill.

8000 lbs at least to be safe. how much you looking to spend? warn is always a reliable standby. as are patriot and ramsey. milemarker is a cheaper version of warn. biggest difference is line speed, they're reliable too though, my roommate has one and its saved us a bunch of times, its just slow.

You get what you pay for applies here, the $400 8k winches work okay with occasional use, and most are imports. The more expensive Warn 8k and 9k winches will be more reliable under repeated hard use, so shop according to your price range and intended use/abuse.

if you buy anything other than warn your wasting your money. warns are the most reliable winches made, they are tried and true, and they stand behind their stuff like no other company

Winch's are a major buy for any jeep owner.
First off no one wants to use it...it means the trail is too tough for the jeep or the jeep isn't up to the trail. With a Rubi thats a hard call.
As to what brand to buy? Everyone here will have an opinion to that. ( and as the old saying goes opinions are like...well you all know it right?:purple: )
Your best bet is going to Quadratec and using there winch advisor chart.
It will give you line speed to amp draw and explain the many terms you will need to know.

Now as to my personal opinion...I don't want to spend $1200.00 on a heavy hood ornament when I can use that money some where else.
My Hi-lift and straps have gotten me out of any situation where my jeep has failed me. ( once in two foot of snow, on a high mountain trail called the rattle snake, a 5+ trail )

I've run a MM10k Hyd and now a Warn XD9k. Which is better...both. The MM Hyd would pull all day (slow ) without moaning. The Warn is faster but I have to let it cool down on long pulls. The argument about the motor needing to be running is ok. BUT, no battery holds enough juice for a long pull (even with my 180amp alternator). Half full, half empty...

The newer MM electrics and other 400 buck ones I don't know anything about. I haven't seen one on the trail here yet. Just Warns and one Ramsey.

Happy trails
