XJ auto trans purchase??

My dreams of owning a '98-01 XJ with a 5 speed seem to be shot. I have been shopping for a month, almost nonstop and can't find a decent manual Cherokee.

I hate to own an automatic transmission but may have to in this case. Can anyone give me some pointers on checking the condition/life of an A/T?? How good are these automatic transmissions??

The auto in late-model XJ's is the AW4, and they're a tough reliable transmission. If the fluid looks and smells okay, and it shifts okay, you should have a decent transmission.
