the other fan runs for the condenser, that's why it's on when the a/c's on. When the pressure in the condenser gets to a certain point the "other fan" kicks on. You got electric fans, right? .did you try tapping it to see if it kicks on with a hot engine? Can you feel/hear the rad. fan relay...

oh and with the battery thing...when one disconnects the battery it clears PCM short term memory where codes are stored on some makes and models (mostley olderish), probably was a loose cap...if you got gas in the past few days.

Could be a gas cap, could be split hoses. Look at all the hoses, from purge solenoid to canister, and the ones from the NVLD pump or whatever EVAP system you have, there is a pump under the hood, and a green cap that looks like a tire valve stem in it, those hoses crack all the time...

I will eventually turn off if the problem is corrected, BUT it's takes sometimes quitle a while. If you cycle your key it will give you the code. Is your odometer digital? it will give it there, if it's not I think the CEL will blink and you gotta count them...

oil in your air filter could be caused by impropper ccv...too much oil could cause increased crank case pressure...i don't know cj's all that well though.

with an xj? well...seatbelt would be on the wrong side, and i think that they bolt up the same..that's a weird question.

rewind..how can you see the chain? does it happen in 4wd? how does the fluid look...and what kind of tcase?

pressure leaking by the o rings on fuel injectors...common in wj's, too. it should hold pressure for 30 mins or so, i think chrysler says.
