Transfer Case Oil - Overheating

So I was told by my local 4x4 shop owner that the case oil in my TJ is ATF and that it is one of the only oils that will boil over if it gets too hot. I'm running 4:10's and when I'm wheeling sometimes it will get hot enough to boil over. At least I think this is what's happening. WHenver we stop I'll see it dripping off the driveline in that general area. I'm pretty sure there isn't a bad seal since it only does it when I'm wheeling.

What do you all think of getting an external automatic transmission cooler assembly and somehow hooking it up to the transfer case? The only way I don't see this working is if the t-case isn't able to force the fluid thru the line. Any mechanics out there can school me up a bit?

I don't think it boils, I just think it just burns. Don't have the slightest idea how you would get the fluid to run through a cooler, you would need pressure or a pump or something to push it through and then something, like a fan, to cool it as it runs through the cooler, and so on.

On the other hand, I'v never heard of a tcase boiling with 410s..many a Jeepers swap gears and don't have such a problem.

Did you happen to feel the fluid when you're wheeling, see if it's hot? Where is it coming out of? Output shaft? or what? If I were a gambeling women I would bet that you got a blown seal and the pressure in the case when you wheel is forcing the fluid out.. on that note, you check your fluid? Have you had your Jeep for a long time and know for fact that there is ATF in there and not some other fluid, the wrong fluid will make things to run weird. It's like corn poop, one of lifes mysteries.

Dude, you've got a leak.

No method of hooking up a cooler unless you mount an external pump. Really no need, it won't get that hot unless it's broken.

Thanks for the info. I talked to my local expert and he said the same thing about the pump. I pretty much figured that. He said to check the vent line and see if it's connected. If not then fluid will come out right there. It is supposed to be ATF in the T-case. I've looked it up in the book and several places on line.

No big deal. :)
