Am looking for a 258 engine to put in my 74 cj5. I would prefer an 80s model that accepts an aluminum valve cover as I already have some parts but my rebuild fell through but it is not a must. Willing to make a drive but not too much more than 5-6 hr. I am in the evansville indiana area. Thanks...
As far as I've heard if it is a molded plastic valve cover it has to be replaced with a plastic one. If you look at the aftermarket ones most of them say will not replace plastic valve cover but the replacement plastic ones are reasonably priced.
Hey buddy I've been in hiding saving money for my rebuild:( maybe he was wrong and it's not a 30 bit it doesn't have a crush sleeve.? The only spec either one of us could find (likely not looking in the right place) was static torque
I'm helping a buddy install 488s in his Dana 30 and I am torquing the pinion to the spec of 200 ft lbs. I cannot find a spec for the rotating torque but checked it anyways and it's 160 in lb which seems insanely tight? Is there a spec anywhere?
Thanks alot carnuck but I actually picked up an 85 cylinder head last weekend. Now to drop off everything at the machine shop to have it measured and see what the total damage is gonna b!!!
Also be sure to check the crankshaft for a groove. The static seal riding on the moving crankshaft can cause it to wear a groove and it will leak again. I don't know if this is common with jeeps but I know it is with many makes and models.
I recently picked up a used 85 head to put on my 74 engine and it wasn't until I got it home that I realized the hole for the coolant temp sensor wasn't where it was on my 74 (right beside the thermostat housing).? Any ideas where it is ? I couldn't see anywhere else in the head that it looked...
I had planned on it I was just curious if anyone knew before I bought the head but regardless I want the new style head so I will do it and update if anyone is as silly as I am and cares :)
Thanks I guess the info as far as cc just isn't out there but I plan on taking my old head with me so maybe ill be able to tell with them side by side. The only thing I can think of if they do in fact use the same piston is the combustion chamber being smaller or the deck height on the block...
My cj5 sat for only a year and the ignition switch developed excessive resistance. It was dash mounted btw but it made it do some crazy stuff and if there is enough resistance it would consume all voltage and not leave anything for other things.
I have a 74 cj5 I'm rebuilding and considering putting a head off an 85 on it to raise the compression. Does anyone know what the cc of the head is on the 74 vs the 85. I know I will have to drill the holes out in the head to accommodate my 1/2 in head bolts but other than that and using 85...
I am rebuilding my 74 258. I am putting a head off an 85 on it. I was curious as to which rebuild kit ppl liked if anyone had an opinion? Also can I use rockers and pushrods from my 74 or do I need new for an 85? Also I had someone tell me if I used the pistons from the 74 I had to get spark...
