The temperature gauge has a voltage regulator circuit in it that powers the fuel gauge. That is the jumper to the fuel gauge. Lots of times, when the temp goes out, it wipes out the fuel gauge as well. on my '78 I gave up and, made my own.

Possible the 5.8 volts, is the real fault. If the solenoid did engage, that could keep it on. It sounds like a wiring issue. Something shorted. Also, I would recheck the ignition switch, against the electrical drawing...

My 78 diagram calls for 1.35 ohm resistance. It is the wire, but. If you could find 10 watt resistor, you could run regular wire to the coil.

The only thing I can add is, shut the engine off while going down a mountain. ha. The chip change will be a waste of time, and money. I reject your reality, and substitute my own..

My '96 had a power amp. under the rear seat, for the rear speakers, that was factory. If yours has the same, it should be pretty easy. With all the changes, adding the computer to the stereo, and all. It has gotten harder to do, without a factory mod. from the dealer. good luck.

If a brush in the starter is tight, it will act as you are describing. Give the rear side of the starter a swat. near where the brushes are. If it works, you have found the problem. I like to us wood, because the power of the battery is nearby. Good luck PS: I'm not saying this is the fix. Just...

My '96 had a bad throttle position sensor. Had to keep my foot on the gas, to keep it from stalling.

If I was a betting man, I would go for bad starter. Too many times this has caused me problems. Starters can have a dead spot in them. When they stop in the perfect place, they don't get the full power to the armature. usually sticky brush.. The only other problem I remember was a bad key...

Have you checked your voltage on the battery while it is running? With it running it should be around 14 volts.
