1990. wrangler 2.5 with 5 speed

Are you sure something is wrong? The only reason I ask is that jeeps are known for their famous tick noise as they get older, and I see as to where this is your first jeep, wouldnt want ya ta do something that isnt necessary. I have been told that the ticking noise comes from a cracked manifold, but it sounds like a tapping noise. Just my 2 cents.

There are several parts to replace, the push rods, the rocker arms, there is a cradle another piece, I don't recall the name, look on rockauto.com, they have a rocker kit, you get everything you need to do one cylinder, it isn't a hard job at all but if you can find a clymer or haines manual so you have all the specs right.

Now I want to agree with the previous poster, 9 times in 10 it is a manifold issue, even the 4.0s are notorious for it, every 2.5 I've seen as well as mine have a little clatter st times that make it sound like a diesel, mine does it at about the 10hr point in long trails or drives. Yours though I'm betting is rockers or a bad lifter if you can control it. Good luck and check out that website, Jerry Bransford first clued me in to it, can't beat the prices.

the rockers should have the tiniest amount of play in them, just barely able to move. Any more than that is not good, and any tighter you will lose noticeable power and won't be able to accelerate or maintain speed without staying on the gas constantly. I would chase it down and diagnose exactly what is ticking before you start doing stuff and having to undo it if it's not what is wrong

Found it on rockauto, its $12.90 per cylinder, just be careful you dont order the one that comes in a set of 32 lol.

SEALED POWER Part # R905 Rocker Arm Assembly

Also if you want to go this far having it apart already, the lifters are sold in packs of 4 at $11.51 each

SEALED POWER Part # HT2011R {#HT976R} Lifter
OHV engine; Speed-Pro Hi-Revolution Hyd.
+ Sold in packs of 4; Price reflects cost of each individual item, not the pack ($46.04 for the pack of 4)

And you might as well do the push rods too, they are $2.42 each (2 per cylinder, $19.36 for all eight )

OMIX-ADA Part # 1741001

All these are the Rockauto prices but the part numbers should work anywhere, let me know if this fixes it, I'm thinking I need to do this myself, thats why I had the info readily handy
