Possible on the 2.5L TJ but you have to go in through the sending unit hole and trim the fill tube from inside the tank. A little more involved than in the YJ.

That doesn't sound like any fun at all! I'm not very mechanically inclined, but I was able to do it in about 45 minutes, IIRC. However, I still have the scars on the back of my hand to show for it when the pliers kept slipping off the tube!

I remember when I first realized I had a 20 gallon tank. I was storm chasing in Nebraska with Tornado Tim and the Dragon Ladies. We had stopped at a gas station to top off the tanks just prior to diving into the front of the storm, and while I was talking to Tim, I just kept squeezing the pump handle until gas ran out of the filler....when I looked at the pump, I had put in 18 gallons into what I had thought to be a 15 gallon tank!!:shock: After that, each time I filled up, I'd do it the same way, but it would take forever to get those last 5 gallons in. Shortly thereafter, I found the link here on Jeepz and did the mod. I was so proud of myself, because it was the first real "major" mod I had done to it by myself! 8)

No, the XJ tanks hold as much fuel as they're capable of.

There are some aftermarket high capacity tanks for some $$.

I sure did! tank read a little less than 3/4 when i filled up on the way home. 13 gallons went in! Before on E i could sqeeze like 11-12. My dad asked if the cuts on my hands and arms were worth it and i just grinned and winced.

I did not had any cuts after doing mine... But i DID have 4 bruises in one forearm, and 2 on the other! :lol: Each time the pliers would slip I would hit my forearm into the metal frame where the filling hole is...
