hi im about to buy this 97 tj it has 307 gears and a dana 44 rear end which he has said is factory, my question was this a available option in 97? i thought it would have to be 3.73 gears with the 30 inch tire package only, am i wrong?

might need transmission in future

The TJs with the dana 44 option all came with 3.07 gears. So the jeep your looking at most likely has the optional dana 44. Nice score finding a TJ with the 44. They are hard to find.

Gonna Try to Trade in Impreza for 89 Jeep Cherokee Laredo

I thought 98 was the first year for the D44 option.....?

D44 was not available as a option during the 97 model year (may 96-oct 97) but... some 97 models that were sold in 97 as 97's were in fact 98's (look at the VIN # and chassis label for production date)

Crazy people in this world!

Never heard of 3.07s in a 44. Slide under a see if the tag is still between the cover screws. They're hard to spot if they've been painted.

so how do i tell if its a 44?
Throw some 35" tires on there and mah the skinny pedal, if you move farther than 10 feet, you got yerself a D44! hehe

You can tell by sight if you know what to look for. the two rears have different differential profiles

the D44 will be a little more spquared off, while the D35 is a bit rounder like the D20's

i found the original invoice for the jeep i have the dana 44 the jeep was bought from a canadian dealership in june of 1997

That's highly possible then, having a '97 with a D44. Many canadian YJ's came with rear D44's as well.
