4.0 question

If you knew the owner of a Jeep, and trusted their maintanence skills (Let's say a 8 or 9 on a 10 scale) What would you say is the normal life span of a 4.0 HO engine? (In terms of mileage)

Assuming that they actually did do the maintanence timely, and everything. Are you talking about without rebuilding or anything?

No rebuild. I have a friend that is trying to talk me into buying his XJ. Just wondering what in your opinioin is the typical lifespan of a 4.0 with above average maintanence. That's all.

I'd say around 200k personally, but I haven't owned a 4.0 from new to dead yet. I've owned 2 Jeeps, but purchased all of them used with around 80k on them already. And neither of them have I driven til the death of the engine.

I would say that you should probably get 200K easily. With good care I don't know why you couldn't hit 250K even 300K. May not be the greatest shape by then, but they are pretty good engines. From what I hear, the thing that will keep them going the longest is the oil. Keep changing it regularly, and your engine will thank you. (from my "sources")

150K. Only $2200 and it's a 98xj. Thinking of "Trailer queening" my TJ and driving the xj around town. (or maybe the other way around) I just miss having an XJ badly.

I like the miata, but it's too small, and I can't carry any gear. Also, with the snow storm, it's rendered 100% useless. Hell, right now it's completely buried and hasn't seen the light of day for about 2 weeks. (Yes I did dig in and start it for a while)

You could use it as a sled. Get up top of a hill and WHEEE! all the way down...

that sure seems like a sweet deal. Does the guy need the cash or something?
what does the interior look like... heck I'm getting excited for ya!!

That's a nice price.

I don't even need to know who owned it. If the oil looks good, there's no sludge on the bottom of the dipstick, no smoke out the exhaust, no significant oil leaks, and the motor idles and sounds smooth I'd be confident to say they're good for well over 200K... probably more if you do in fact know it's been well maintained.

My YJ has 188K and I'm telling you the motor is as strong as the one in the Unlimited. I take it to work occaisionally and do so with no worry of a breakdown. I knew the previous owner and he's meticulous about maintenance. I might let a motor go an extra thousand miles before oil changes but not Kevin... and the Jeep shows it.

If you have the cash and the Miata isn't what you reaaly want or need then buy the XJ. Sure it may need little things from time to time but the powertrain will last a long time if you continue the good care it has received.

Does it have the auto trans with overdrive? That's the AW4 transmission... solid transmission and the gearing is great for all around use (DD, trails).
Please... if you buy it I won't look as insane for all my vehicle shuffling ;)

Not sure about the transmission, but I save sooo much $ on gas with the miata. 34 miles/gallon!

AS for the "Car Shuffling" you speak of, I'm right there with you. I go thru vehicles like underwear. I almost considered trading the TJ for my old XJ back again, and some cash as well (He was trying to get a TJ in trade on Craigslist about 2 months ago) Damn I miss my XJ!!!

The current XJ is a 2 door, with plenty of creature comforts. I think the price is right because I'm a friend, and he's got tooo many vehicles.

Actually, it has had very little done to it. Just regular maint. (oil changes and such), water pump, t-stat, fuel pump. That's about it.

LMAO:lol:

Hell, if I could get it out of the pit of snow it's still in, I'd take you up on that. We didn't get any snow last night tho, so perhaps the I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel?
