4X4 IN 96 ZJ

I just bought a 96 Grnad Cherokee Laredo. I went to use the 4X4 and it did not engauge. The light to indicate that the front wheels are engauge came on but the 4X4 did not go in. I clicked my trany into reverse for a split second and back into drive and the 4X4 locked in. I also have a 95 yj and I can shift that into 4X4 with out a problem. Is this the norm for the crang cherokee?

I have a 93 grand cherokee and I have to do the same thing to get it into 4 wheel drive.
But I dont think that's how it works because my 4x4 is all screwed up. you can read what's wrong with mine in the postings.
