5.71 gears for the 14 bolt rear?

RE: Some numbers for you guys.

Have you got a front axle yet? That's the one to be worried about. 14bolts are everywhere. It's harder to find a front axle---the majority of labor to not only rebuild but actually mount the axles is going to be spent on the front---and the front is just going to be more expensive all around. The biggest hurdle in this swap is mounting the front and getting the steering right. That is going to be a sizeable expense on it's own if you aren't fabricating it all yourself. Are you making the front swap kit or buying one of the aftermarket ones?

Are you going to be stretching the wheelbase any? A TH400 is long....and a CJ5 is short. I thought you were doing this on a CJ7, which would still be iffy, but I don't see it fitting between an 83.5" wheelbase and still being able to handle the driveshaft angle that a 4" SOA is going to require. There is alot to plan here.

As far as the axle width, I'd prefer the narrower one myself. It's going to be really wide anyway with the 39s, a wider axle is just going to require you to run a wider trail. The 63" unit will provide plenty of stability with those wide tires.

haven't picked one out for the front yet, but the 14 bolt looks like a winner for the rear. The TH400 might not fit huh? How would I go about stretching the frame or the wheel base? Even if I kept the T-150 3-Speed, is there any way I could run 39"s? I don't have any plans for the steering yet, I don't know which axle I'm getting, maybe a D44 or D60? I got a passenger side diff on the front axle. . . I have a lot of IDEAS but no knowledge on steering. Should I consider a 4-link if going with a TH400 and Dana300? I can make bumpers and cages but have no experiance in suspension. . . Any questions or comments I'll be happy to recive or respond to.

I'm gearin mine for all around trail use, not specifically for rocks. I wouldn't go as low if I had a v8, but this 4banger likes to wind up. Most gear calculators read that my 4banger will be back close to stock RPMs with something between 5.17 and 5.38, with 34" or 35" tires. I'll error on the low side. Plus the OD will help onroad.

I'm not a big fan of low TC's, here in the Midwest on the terrain we wheel. Every Rubi I've seen or somebody who swapped in 4:1, is just too low. They have a lot of trouble finding the right gear for the trail. Jeeps with the stock 2.72:1 seem to have it a lot easier.

Just posting FWIW, not sure how you plan on using this creation you're building.

Same here. I'm not a fan of really low Tcase gears either, but they can be used effectively to give an otherwise single purpose rig a little more range. I do like the doublers that the LWB guys can run. You have the double-low range for the very few times you might actually need it, and you still have a sensible single-low for the rest of the time.

I usually trail ride in 4lo-2nd gear..just crawl along. thats running a 4bang,36's,4.88's. on the road I can use 5th on a flat surface...but mostly just run 4th. I can cruise @ 60 and about 2950 rpm.

Um, I might just keep my D20 TC and still look for a Auto-transmission/or the other way around, who knows. . . I might have trouble with the TH400 huh? Would the Dana 300 bolt up to a T-150 or would I have to find a T-176 4-speed? I saw redrooster had frame extensions on his for some extra wheel base up front, would that help at all, or will I need to stretch the rear out. How would I go about doing this?

Get a salvage one from a military CUCV Chevy one ton and the front to match. It will be geared 4.56 and have a Detroit Locker in the rear. Expect to pay $500 for the rear.
I did hear that someone was making lower gears for the 14 bolt. I don't recall if it was Randy's or who. I read it on pirate4x4.com.

Have they actually came out with anything lower than 5.13's for the 14 bolt yet?
I thought they were just prototypes for now, but I may be wrong. I haven't looked into it for a while, but I remember seeing that on PBB a while ago.

RE: Re: RE: Pop or soda?

Dude, 5.13's will be fine front and back with the v8. ALl of your questions that are going through your head ran through mine a few months ago. I guess it just floated over to you. My 14 bt and dana 60 are 67-68" wms just to give you a little idea. It is really freking wide and I love it.

RE: want to trade jeep for sandrail or yfz450 in Oregon

Yeah the 14bolt van axle that I'm courting is 70" wide, plus 39x18.5 boggers, Thats 107" wide! Oh crap, I gotta re-think that. would that look cool or be too wide?

RE: Re: RE: Pop or soda?

it is 70" wms to wms. your wheels will have some backspacing so it won't be nearly that wide.

mine's 86" in the rear and 90" in the front (from outer sidewall to outer sidewall) with 44x18.5 TSL's.

catalytic converter question

Honestly, you will not notice a difference between my width and the 70". If you like my width, go for it. Just in case you don't know it, the 39.5 boggers really aren't 18 inches wide, they are more like 15" wide inflated. My wheels have 3.5" backspacing and are even with the calipers in the rear.

My TJ with 36x14.50 TSL Radials is 77" "outer sidewall to outer sidewall" and I have been in some trails that I have rubbed BOTH tires going between trees! I actually went between 2 one time where I climbed about 8-10" up the trunks till it was room enough to go thru....glad my flares like 4" covering my tires!

Beans or no beans in Chilli?

They stick out that far? WOW! ! ! ! !
