87 stalls

I have an 87, 4.2 auto with a 32/36weber with a juicepack 6. I have replaced my ignition module and have adjusted my timing to 8ish. I have the vacuum advanced hooked up only to the weber. The PCV hooked up to the Weber and charcoal canister. I have the CTO hooked up to the canister and to the EGR. Two plugs are capped (they should go to the vacuum advanced hose). I did a vacuum test according to the book on the brand new EGR and it doesn't hold vacuum. (might purchase another one but holding off on that one). I have the fuel regualtor set at 3.

I have not done the Nutter Bypass yet.

It dies randomly at stops. The RPM will bounce up and down prior to the stalling. Sometimes I can stop that by giving a lil gas. It has died after cruising at 60 when I let off the gas in preparation of stopping. It starts right back up with no problems at all. It does hesitate when the engine is cold but I haven't noticed it after getting to operating temp.

thanks for any help...

Could be a blocked passage in the carb. You could try taking it off and running carb cleaner through it.

my 85 cj7 is having the same exact issue... stalling out at stops and red lights once the engine is hot...

i put an entire can of carb cleaner on it and into it... w/o removing the carb... it seemed to help notably... i was given a carb rebuild kit by the former owner along with a manual choke kit.... but i tend to think it may make better sense to buy a new carb.

i was reading about the nutter bypass tonight... but i think i have to work out other issues first before i get to that point.

what do you guys think?

Hey JackedupJohn,

I took my carb off and found that my four anchor bolts were loose. I went ahead and replaced all the gaskets and such and bam... it hasn't died once.

good luck with yours.

by "all the gaskets" do you mean you rebuilt the carb or just reseated it? also are u running the carter carb...?

No, I didn't rebuild it completely but I did change all the gaskets. I'm running a 32/36 weber.

Hope you don't mind myself butting in!
If you have a carb rebuild kit, by all means, use it! It really isn't that bad. I love taking apart carbs and cleaning them. If you go ahead and rebuild it, make sure you remember where your idle screw and mixture screws are. Saves a lot of time and messin around. Even with the Carter, if you read about some of the common flukes and fix them or unplug them, you can get some decent results. Jeeptech.com has some info on the Carter. It's under the Learning to love your 258 section.
My Jeep already had the Nutter done to it, so not much help there. I've heard it's pretty easy, though.

very much appreciate the advice collin and everyone else...

i think i will look into having sum1 w experience rebuild my carb and install my manual choke...

i bet anything that my jeep will be way happier afterwards...

i cant keep my jeep fed w gas cause i am driving its WHEELS OFF!
