Don't know if you want to skimp on this system as it is not easy to fix after something goes wrong, but there are several websites on the web that detail you how to do it yourself. that way would definetly keep the cost down. There are several different setups to convert a R-12 sytem to a R-134a. The most simplest is the orifice port adapter from a local parts store. Some setups can be as complicated as replacing the compressor, inline filter and dryer.
I assume your system is not working. If it is working, leave it alone. No cheap way for you to do it yourself. Once the system is opened you have to evacuate it with a vacuum pump and make sure it holds, recharge with the proper weight of R134, and the correct amount of PAG oil, all with the required tools and knowledge etc.etc.
WHY ? The old r12 is far better at cooling and if its working,maybe just have it "cleaned" and recharged.Little hard to find r12,but,it was a lot better deal.
