89 wrangler timing cover

i have a 89 wrangler. im replacing the timing chain & sprockets. my question is on the timing cover there are 2 grooves on the inside. one has been completely worn off & the other is almost gone. was there a guide or tensioner thats suppose to be there.

Sorry i'm lost. 2 grooves on the Timing cover?. 4.0 liter timing chain doesn't have tensioners on them. If the chain has a deflection of (12.7mm) 1/2 inch, the chain must be replaced.

no its a 4.2L. sorry for the mix up. & the chain has like a full inch deflection. i just bought it a month ago to kinda rebuild. it has 266,000 miles on it is still running. crazy i didn't even hear the cain hitting the cover

A full inch of deflection on the chain is way too much.

well i got the kit & it came with the 2 sprockets & chain so im just going to throw it on. i think i was just looking to deep into it. thanks for the help.
