90 jeep cherokee starting problems

Found them... Nevermind...TJ or YJ rear seat belts. Black.

I just got a 90 cherokee limited 4.0L with just over 200,000 miles on it and im having trouble getting it to start.

It cranks over and fires up, then the rpms go up to 2 or 2 1/2, and then they come back down and it dies. If I give it a little gas it seems like it floods and then dies, but if I give it alot of gas I can keep it running at about 3 or 4k rps. as soon as I let off the gas it dies.

I just replaced the plugs and wires, Im thinking it might be the fuel filter or fuel pump, but what do you guys think?

I had the same problem on my old 89 XJ. It used to idle real rough or die if you gave it too much gas. Ran really rich and dumped out black smoke too.
Replaced the crankshaft prosition sensor on it and then it ran normally again

OK, I replaced the crankshaft position censor, and no change, I did replace the fuel filter, and it runs a little better but still dies. It feels like its starving of gas should i try the fuel pump? isnt it inside the gas tank? The fuel pump is probably not an easy thing to replace, any suggestions?

I don't think it is the pump, usually they will fail at higher speed, not lower (from what I have seen). was it all of a sudden or has this been coming on over time? (might help find the problem). You mention plugs/wires.. what about cap/rotor?

well you have got to start w/the easy stuff -there's definitely the tune up to go with, cap rotor (you've done plugs wires) there's only two reasons a car wont run fuel or fire, you can turn your pump on and hear if its priming your fuel line by turning the ignition key to on (but not starting) --fuel pumps are relatively easy and cheap, but if you replace that and its still not running you have to start considering injectors (how old how long since replaced) there's an idle control module that costs a small fortune (really only about $100) right underneath the ignition coil that could be crapping out--in fact you may just want to check all the wiring over to that module (I found some loose exposed wires around that module when I bought mine and fixing them cleared up some of my problems)--I hate to even mention the computer ... good luck man
