91 YJ in trouble

I need help guys.

Driving along the highway the other day, it has been bitter cold in the northeast when this happened, I started hearing a bad sound. It sounded as if something wasn't lubricated.
When I pulled over, I had a spray of oil around the left side and underneath. All my oil, at least the measurable was gone. I had a quart with me and added to see if I would get a puff of oil steam/smoke. I didn't. Did I mention it was bitterly cold?
I had it towed to my place and I am trying to figure out where the gasket system gave way. Want to see if I can salvage it, before I buy a new engine. Any suggestions on where I should look or possible culprits.

Thanks for any input,
Vasily

Geaux Tigers!!

what motor ? Refill it and watch where it leaks. Any fluids where they should not be , oil in antifreeze vise versa ?

you say it was cold, I can't see how anything could freeze and cause this.
Get under there and find out where its comming from. Front/rear main
maybe get lucky and the plastic valve cover broke. ( not my luck)

Check the oil sending unit. mine went on my old car and did the same thing. I thought I cracked my block until I filled it and ran it, poured out like a drain plug was missing.

Good luck

Has anyone seen the sun latley?

I've seen the sun... 70's for the past 3 weeks! Lovin' it.

Vasily, if it's from the passenger side and it's motor oil (not transmission fluid or t-case fluid) I would first change your oil filter. The next easy check would be the valve cover and gasket. But in all cases, drain the remaining oil, replace the filter, fill with 5 quarts and see where it leaks. Could be something simple, could be something bad. If it doesn't leak while sitting still, start her up after filling and see where it sprays from. Then come back to us.

Probably came out the oil dipstick, common with this engine if the PCV or CCV system is plugged and the crankcase can not vent it's pressure.

Find the two large vacuum lines coming from the valve cover. Pull the one connecting the valve cover with the airbox at the airbox, make sure it's PULLING air into the valve cover.

Pull the large line connecting the valve cover with the intake manifold, at the valve cover. Make sure it's PULLING air into the intake manifold from the valve cover.

Post here if it's not, we'll track down the problem.

Good guess Bounty.
I noticed it after I replaced the valve cover gasket wqith RTV. Definitely a leak problem.
I tried your suggestion. The airflow from PCV to air filter is out toward the air filter. I just replaced the old valve a few months back because it failed. The other outlet on the side of cover (driver side) is pulling air toward the manifold.
Are the valves directional? Could I have gotten a valve working in the wrong direction?
