94 wrangler yj transmission issues

First post here. I have gotten alot of great info from this forum. Two questions:

1. How do you remove the "stick" from the tower assembly?
2. Just bought a used AX5 transmission for a swap out. The transmission I got does not have the cone? assembly that holds the fork for the clutch slave. I swapped out the front bearing plate from the old transmission, bolted up with no problem.. Will this be OK? also does anyone have a trick to installing a new front bearing retainer seal without having to shell out $50 for the special tool? I tried using the seal from the replacement in the old plate but the shaft does not turn freely as it did before????

To remove the stick from the tower assembly, pull the rubber boot off to reveal the spring-loaded collar beneath. You have to depress this spring loaded collar and turn it 1/4 turn to unlock the shifter. The shifter will then pull straight out.

The front cover is swappable between the early and late transmissions, sounds like you're on the right track to making the early transmission work with your external clutch slave. Sorry I'm of no help on the seal.

Welcome to Jeepz.
For the new seal installation, instead of the special seal installer tool, i use a socket thats big enough to catch the outer rim of the seal housing. With the use of a small hammer, gently tap the socket flat on the center as you watch the seal. The trick is getting the seal to slide in evenly. Once it's made it's way in a quarter of the way in, just tap it in the tube gently until it's fully seated in the tube retainer.

Thanks bounty hunter and steel headz. Getting the shift out of the tower is done, actually thats how I created the small problem I have. I got PO'D at the gasket being in my way trying to rotate the collar and cut it off :shades:
I have a new one but the only way I see to install it is to seperate the "stick" from the ball assembly. I just dont want to tear up anything else.
I know it can be done, thought you might know the trick.

SteelHeadz. Worked like a charm. Thanks. What I did not do the first time was get ALL of the seal out of the tube. After I went back and looked I realised that the outer metal? ring for the seal was still in place. Pryed it out and the new seal went in with no problem.

Any thoughts on this stick thing I mentioned? It looks like the actual stick is held to the assembly by some sort of locking spring clip. I'm tired of "breaking" things and having to buy more parts to get this baby back on the road.

Bounty_Hunter, Thanks for checking back. My terminology as an old dinosaur is probably the problem. Transmission shifter. I have the assembly removed from the tower. ( ball, spring, plate etc.) but need to remove the actual "stick" from the assembly to install the new dust boot as mentioned before. My fault :shades:. I know you can seperate it from the internal tower assembly but as I mentioned before my methods don't always provide casualty free results. Thought someone might know the trick to this without tearing anything up. Thanks
