Another cooling question.

I have replaced the radiator, thermostat, and water pump in my 95 4.0l. The temp gauge jumps up and down by 5-10 degrees. Very annoying. It will show an increase in temp, then shoot right back down to normal level. What can I do to possibly remedy this?

switch to aftermarket (mechanical) guages... more reliable and (usually) better sending units

Spare on the roof made for some excessiv

Yeah, after I replaced the heater core, hoses and thermostat and did a radiator flush, my temp gauge now reads about 25° too low. Doesn't jump around but its consistently low. Is it a big deal to switch to mechanical gauges?

This actually sounds normal to me.
temp increases, fan kicks on, temp lowers.

Yeah, I don't thing the fluxuation is much. Do you feel any performance loss?

That's just the thermostat opening and closing.

It is closed until it reaches a certain temp, then opens. When it opens, the temp of the engine goes down slightly from the cooler coolant from the radiator. Now your thermostat closes and the cycle starts all over again.

What temp thermostat do you have? Is it a higher temp than the stock one? If so, the coolant in the radiator is stationary longer and gets colder, which will be a significantly bigger difference to the coolant inside the motor, that is already at a higher temp due to the higher temp thermostat and it will close the thermostat more quickly when it hits it. A lower temp one may be more consistant, and will open and close more slowly, being less noticeable.

I found I had much better heat in the winter with the higher temp one, and didn't mind the fluctuation.

Hope that made sense :?

Its a 180 degree thermostat. This cycling occurs about every 15 seconds. Thing is, I replaced all this stuff about a year, year and a half ago, and now this just started.

RE: Re: RE: voltage regulator

Seems strange to me, I had the same exact result after installing a 195 degree thermostat.

Either way, for it to be a rythmic pattern vs randomly jumping, it is most likely your themostat opening and closing. If you are sure you put a 180 deg one in, it is probably going bad. A bad sending unit shouldn't cycle like that, nor should a bad gauge :?

RE: starter problem

That makes sense. Maybe I will just drop in a new thermo and see what it does. Would it be worth putting one of those turbo city thermostat housings too?
