another fuel tank question

I have a 97 TJ with the 2.5. I have been reading the posts about fuel tank size and am still unclear. do I have a quick fix to increase the my fuel capacity? I have run it until the gueage showed almost completely empty and the most I have ever been able to get into the tank was about 12 1/2 gallons. I checked out this link

http://www.jedi.com/obiwan/jeep/15to20gal.html

and it describes a way to lower the pick-up and get 20 gal capacity. I looked in my haynes manual and it didn't show what this article describes. What is the scoop?

I have not heard of the TJ increase...might be worth researching

Here is a copy of what ARKYPYRO linked to:

Here's how to "enlarge" your TJ gas tank, written by an anonymous contributor:

Take down the tank and gain access to the top. Unscrew the sending unit/pump/filter and pull it out. It holds about a litter of fuel inside to keep the pump cool, so lift it straight out and tilt it back into the tank.

The column is more like a telescoping unit. It can slide up or down. Tabs on the side allow it to click in two positions. 15g and 20g. Sliding it down lowers the intake of the whole assembly, where before it sat about 4.5 inches above the tank bottom. The float acutally drops because of this making the whole system fairly accurate now.

I don't know about yours, but my fuel gauge lied all the time. Empty ment I had 4 gallons left and it would always drop hard on the last quarter. Now it's consistant all the way through.

RE: A-1 Rockcrawler - me want!

My understanding of modifying the TJ tank is to remove the sending unit and reach inside the tank to trim the extended fill tube. You can't trim it too much, but probably within an inch from the top is plenty.

Hmm... Id never heard of being able to increase capacity on the TJ.. I just thought they all had 19 gal. tanks.

Regardless your problem with running it almost empty and even then not getting as much in it as you think you should could be this. Ive heard the gauges are set to read totally empty even with about 3 gal. or so left in the tank. Dont know this to be true, but it makes sense.

RE: Car is clunking in 4x4...help lots of snow tonight

Ya, that's what I was thinking. I always thought fuel gauges were set to always show a little shy of your actual fuel level so one does not end up stranded with no gas.

RE: Can

Yuppers, that's how they're calibrated by all the major auto manufacturers. You've always got a little bit of "reserve" left when the guage is showing empty. My old Toyota 4x4 (as well as mine and my wife's Camry's) would run 100 miles after the needle showed empty, and everyone I've ever talked to with a Toyota product said pretty much the same thing.

haha... not in a yj.... when my needle hits the 1/4 tank mark... it means it is sayin "i'm not gonna show you have until you put more gas in there"

Yeah, mine's that way now. When I first got it, there was always a bit left after the big "E", but once I started cramming that extra 5 gallons in, it got less accurate.

RE: Okay, THAT freaked me out!

My YJ is still showing empty with like 9 gallons left. Of course it shows full with about 15 of 20 gallons left.

I increased the YJ fuel capacity about a half a liter by putting in the XJ fuel filler. It sits higher in the body than the stock filler neck and adds about a eight inches of fuel line. :)

About the half size of a Pepsi bottle.

RE: Re: RE: and then I find this out....

Your gas gauges actually work??? What does that feel like? Mine bounces like a rubber pointer. Empty is when my common sense says I drove too many miles per needle bounce.

the filler is not intended to hold gas
