Anybody have this problem? - - Broken Control Arm Bracket

Under my TJ this weekend making sure everything was tight and where it's supposed to be when what do I see? The piece of steel bracket on the driver side frame that the upper control arm attaches to has been twisted off! I'm going to get it welded back to the frame. Does anyone see a problem with using the original bracket? I don't know if the dealer parts place will sell that piece since it's welded to the frame.

RE: EVERYONE READ!! IMPORTANT!!

They won't sell it, you would have to get something custom made if you want heavier metal. Just have it welded back on, and plated and gusseted where it needs it.

It's pretty common, especially when you're hard on the jeep when wheelin.

RE: Selectable Locker

broke mine off not to long ago welded it back together and welded it back on... works for now until i get my la's

RE: Say a Jeep Prayer for Him.....

I just talked to one of my local 4 wheel drive experts and he said that is a common problems on lifted TJ's. I have a 4" suspension lift + 2" coil spacers. The upper control arms are a little too short to compensate for this making the angle too extreme to handle the stress. The best way to fix it is to:

A. lose the 2" coil spacers. (don't want to do that)
B. get a long arm kit. (can't afford that)
C. weld it back together and box it in at the same time. (can afford that)

RE: Selectable Locker

Correct, the control arms are too near vertical, and any bump that would normally be soaked up by the suspension is instead transmitted up to the frame. The control arm mounts can't take that constant beating. Be ready for more of it until you lessen the lift or install a LongArm.

Good example for all those recently asking about adding coil spacers to 3"+ springs.

Rubicon Express control arm drop brackets are another option. They lower the mounts to keep stock angles at around 4-4.5" of lift. You could use them and adjustable short arms with 6" of lift and not have those issues. The only problem is they are pricey and you loose a little bit of ground clearance but that is minimal.

RE: Re: RE: Google SMS-Am I the ONLY person who didn

Good suggestion, forgot about those as you don't see them as much.

I wonder if anyone could make a bracket that might raise the rear of the arm where it attaches to the axle instead? Wouldn't this have the same effect as lowering the front with the RE brackets?

Cepek Lift?

The axle ends of the control arms are already mounted pretty high above the axle (uppers). Any more height there would be too much leverage, and it'd rip right from the axle.
