As most here have said its going to cost money...well since you have some to blow...

Buy a 502 crate motor from Chevy, factory numbers are around 400-500 horse.

Or the ZZ572..Summit has them for about $13K.
A more realistic suggestion would be to junkyard source an LS1. They are light, powerful and have plenty of aftermarket support. I don't know what the factory numbers are but I have ridden in tube buggies with the LS1 and they are no joke. My buddy that has one installed a 100HP Zex nitrous kit. I have yet to see him use it. He said he shot it once on the street and it scared the crap out of him.

Drop a C-16 Caterpillar engine in there. That will definatly smoke any ricer out there. Hell, It smokes the tires on our Peterbuilt with a 15' sleeper with ease.

Just be sure to put at least 2.5 ton axles in there!! They have 2000 lb/ft of tourque when they're completely stock....

There is more to a fast vehicle than just the engine. It requires that the whole vehicle be tuned for what your intended purposes are. Weight reduction is important, as well as sensible gearing. gearing that works for what you want is completely wrong from what you would use to scale a rockface. You don't need one-tons or rockwells. You don't need superchargers or turbos. Nitrous is a possibility and will make it easier and cheaper to do, but you don't NEED it. All of my Jeeps are multi-purpose, and the number one purpose is going fast.....Jeep style. It's not hard to make a good runner that can score some nice kills in stoplight to stoplight drag races. A full on "fast" Jeep takes alot of work and money, but you don't need that for the prey you'll be hunting. I'll stay out of a long winded technical response, but I'll answer any questions that I can.

Go watch a real(as in serious competitors) organized mud racing event and then tell me a Jeep can't be fast. Most of what works in mud racing also works pretty good on the pavement. Same basic build concepts.

I've seen a few mud races in my time, and I gotta say, they are AWESOME!!!! I never would have believed you could get anything to shoot down a 100' mud pit in the blink of an eye until I went to my first one many, many years ago. It's absolutely unbelievable how fast those things can go in such a short distance on such a slimy, slippery, sludgy surface!!

EDIT to add: I had a buddy in high school whose dad built a fast CJ5. It would pull wheelies for 15-20 feet in the school parking lot, and would run mid-13's in a quarter at the local drag strip. His dad also used it to plow a half acre garden in 4-low, using a 7-bottom plow.

Oh man Sparky, you've got to be hardcore to drop the hammer in a built '5 on pavement, where you have traction. 13 seconds is very respectable for a Jeep that can still perform offroad duties!

As far as the mud Jeeps being fast, drop those things on a set of 33" ATs and you have the makings of a Jeep that can hurt alot of cars feelings in a short stoplight drag.....if you can control it.
