I have an 03" wrangler and i'm looking to change the axle gearing to around 4.11 or a 4.27 so i can run my 33" with more power. Is axle gear changing just switchin the spur and pinion? or is there other more technical junk i need to know[addsig]

ring and pinion... that's it... i replaced my stock gears after they broke... not a tough job... just make sure you use the right tools for working with the pin... it can be a bitch if not equipped right[addsig]

What axle gears do you have now?

The ratios available for the stock D30 and D35 axles are 3.07, 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, 4.56, and 4.88 :-D

The easiest and possible cheapest method is to find a used set of TJ 4banger axles with 4.10 gears and swap them straight in. Can be easier than setting up two ring and pinion sets.[addsig]

yeah what bounty hunter said....you prolly find that it is cheaper in the long run to swap out axles for those 4.10's of a 4 banger than it is to buy new ring and pinion + install kit. i am in the process of buying a d30 and d35 with 4.10 out of a four banger.

My new TJ has 3.73 with front dana 30 and i'm going to guess the rear is the same but iwth a dana 35 or 44? People tell me that i really don't need the gearing change for 33" But on all of the web sites i visited it says to change gearing to 4.11 to 4.27ish to get good power but not sucking all my gas away.[addsig]

If you have the 4.0L Sport with auto and 3.73 gears, you just may have the D44 rear axle. A friend of mine wheels his hard with 35" tires and 3.73 gears. The auto transmission multiplies torque, so you can get by with a taller gear ratio than if you had the 5spd. His crawl speed is a little too fast, requiring riding the brakes, but it does fine onroad with the big heavy meats.[addsig]

I run 33's and I had 3:07's . I swapped axles with 4:10's. HUUUUUGGE difference.
I also have the 5 speed I6. Have fun! [addsig]

i got the X version as if thats much differnt from the sport. I is running a 5 speed..but i'm also looking to get them ARB air lockers so it might be a good idea to change all them goodies in one shot huh..ya know cause i'll already have the diff cover off and playing in there...or a mechanic cause I don't know the first thing about diffs[addsig]

The X did not come with a D44 rear axle, so you have the D35. Most 4.0L and 4.2L 5speeds came with 3.07 axle gears. If this is the case, you'd definately need 4.10 gears if you go with 33" or larger tires.[addsig]

when I was buying the TJ I was making the dealer go crazy with my stupid questions.. stock the X came with 3.07 but there was an option to bring that up to 3.73 and i took it.[addsig]
