bestop supertop...stupid question

Hey guys....I feel like an idiot asking this, but like they say if you dont ask ya cant learn.

Just installed a brand new bestop supertop on my 87 YJ. Installation was pretty much a breeze, but my question is, can the top be folded down for open air driving, or does it have to be completely removed????

The installation instruction Bestop provides are very good but when it come to explaining how the top is folded up for open air driving they basically suck...that is unless the only way open air driving can be achieved is if the top is completly removed, which to me takes away from the idea of having a soft top. My reason for getting one was that during the summer months i would remove the hardtop put the soft top on leave it down but if it was about to rain I could put it back up basically like a convertable car, but if the whole thing has to be removed from the jeep that defeats the purpose of the top....
Please help me out I have always had a hard top Jeep and used a bikini top in the summer but I just picked this 87 up with only 55k miles from the original owner in excellent codition and wanted to protect the interior from the elements a little better than a bikini top would

Thanks

I had a Best Top put on my YJ a while back, and yeah, the instructions make it sound kinda like you have to remove it, but you don't really. Don't unsnap it from the rear bar like they say, leave it attached. Just fold it all back onto the tailgate, then there should be a small strap on each side that will come over the bars and fit into the side rails (where the rear side windows attach) to secure it all. Easy operation, I can do it in less than 2 minutes now! Putting it back up takes about the same amount of time, too.

Thanks Sparky Watts!!!! I will give that a try, just seems like alot of material to be folded up in a small area.....do the platsic windows have to be removed????

Yeah you have to pull the windows out. Make sure they don't blow out of the Jeep! I've seen a few over the years on roadsides.

Yeah, pull the side windows out and roll the back window up to keep them from getting creased and scratched. It'll all fit once it's folded down, just takes a little practice.

It folds pretty easy for me but i can never get it to look very good folded down. Mine always seems like it was just thrown there. I tried folding it carefully. Does yours look like that guys?

Yup. All the time! You can't fold anything neatly in the Kansas wind!

I've got a TJ - MAJOR improvements in top upping and downing - but it still looks like I've got a dead body back there when I fold it down. When it bothers me, I just take it off (4 torx - 2 minutes). Ever notice how those "covers" they sell look so nice and neat in the pictures?

I just got a pavment ends flip top. I like it a lot, I've always had a hardtop too. It's nice to be able to just open the sun roof if you dont feel like taking the whole top down.
