Kind of a hard question to answer. It all depends on how much fab you are willing to do. Just put a 460 in a 00 Ford Ranger which required cutting out fender wells and making a new firewall. If you have good fab skills you could throw a Cat diesel in there but it would twist the unitbody as soon as you put it in gear.

biggest I ever seen was a 400 small block but it was crammed tight

I have to say a ford 300 straight 6 is the best fit, and it can be bored and stroked to a 400.

a few months back a fourwheeler mag had a jeep xj with a 502 bbc in it.. i would say you can put any motor in it.. how much time and money it will take is the hard question

Oh yes, Novak is a great Jeep resource, radiators to slip yolk eliminators. Some prices may seem steep but for the product id say its well worth the price.
