I am looking to get a bikini top for a 2006 TJ and I am trying to figure out if I need the windshield channel or not, I've been told that if I have a factory soft top I don't need one with certain bikini tops. Does anyone have any information on bikini tops and if a windshield channel is needed or not? Thanks for any information you can give!!!! Also, what brand do you prefer??

It depends on the brand of bikini top, check with the vendor they will be able to tell you which do and which don't.

Bestop has the best full soft and bikini tops that i know of out there in the market when it comes to their sailcloth material. They're also the manufacturer of the Jeeps factory soft tops. So as far as fitment is concerned, i would trust their product over the other competitors. The one's that say that IF you have a soft top on your jeep , your not required to purchase the header, this means you have to remove the factory header off your existing soft top and use it on the bikini top. Be aware of the kits you may need for the installation of the bikini. If i remember correctly, there are 2 brackets required on each end of the header tubes that originally attached to the main frame of the full soft top. These brackets will prevent the header from tilting back when you install it without the frame.

For my 05 I bought the bestop header bikini and the bestop NO DRILL header channel. This attaches to the top of the windshield with clamps like the OEM soft top. I had to remove the little plastic extensions on the new channel because they were not quite the right shape for the windshield frame gasket but no big deal. I took apart the OEM door surrounds and only installed the top portions (remove the "C" clip at the hinge joint and separate the two parts). These are mounted with the two threaded knobs above each door. Then you can snap the bikini top side edges into the door surround grooves just like the OEM soft top and get a pretty weather tight setup over your head. For heavy rain add the bestop back cutain right behind your seat to keep the back draft from blowing rain onto the dash. Best of luck - John

Who needs a bikini top? Go topless. I do.:twisted:8)

i have a bestop safari bikini top with the no drill header. works great. the header is 2 bolts where the oem softop hooks on. then the top slides right in. easier to install the top with 2 people.
