hello everyone, havent been around in a while and havent had any time to work on my jeep... but i was looking at it and had a brain storm!!!

what does everyone think about filling the frame rails with expandable foam, like the stuff from home depot thats used to fill window frames? im looking for a way to stop water mud and sand from getting in the frame and rotting it from the inside out... :?:

I drilled a weep hole in my last one. I have plenty of rot holes in my latest one to let all the water out.
oh yea and the foam would only trap moisture

an old school rust prevention that my father used to (and probably still does) he pours old motor oil inside the frame of his vehicles in various locations.

the EPA might not approve, but it works.

I'm a builder in the Midwest. So I use the foam enough to be familiar. It has a life of 2-5 years. After that it breaks down leaving your frame filled with rotting mold

I've been mulling over the same idea for sometime, but was hesitant to fill my frame with something that would be almost impossible to remove. It looks like Buck hour has the answer to my doubts & I think that about kills it for me anyway.I think as messy as it can be good old undercoating is about the best for innerframe treatment.

i hear that people get those flats plastic push in plugs that fit the different openings and install them. then they go over the outside with some kind of rhinoliner/herculiner type stuff that seal the plugs and makes the frame waterproof from the outside. if you cannot find the right sized plugs, maybe you could cut some type of flat plastic and rtv it (or stick it somehow) over the holes? then you could rhinoliner it and it would be waterproof.

just something i had read about a few years ago

I like this oil idea. however, I agree that the EPA would probably have a fit if you start leaking on the trail. lol

Are there enough holes in the frame to spray paint into? Some of the high end rust reformer paints do a pretty good job!

I beleive if you clean it up good, do a reasonable job preping it with a cupped wire brush on a 4" grinder. Spray inside it with that Rustolium rust prevenitive thru the holes [ the name escapes me at the moment ] and paint it really well. I think it'll be fine. You can go back and hit it with the preventive every so often. That's my plan anyway, I also like the oil trick. I will say this, mine obviously has had its fair share of leaks over the last 31 years [motor oil, trans grease, transfer case, diff lube]. From the tailshaft forward the frame is covered in grease and solid as can be. From that point back it was dry, dirty and rusty. So you might say the oil trick has been tested.

The expanding foam will trap salt and water inside the frame. RUS-FREE makes a really nice undercoating spray gun which will fit into the holes of the frame and spray rust preventative onto most of the inside of the frame. I wash out the inside of my frame several times each winter (along with the entire underneath of the Jeep) . Best of luck - John

Go to a good body shop in your area (not the big body shop chains) ask if the can spray body wax on the inside of your frame. It slows down the rust and prevents new rust from starting. Epa approved.
