Cant engage in grear

I have a 1988 Jeep cherokee and i cant engage into gear unless i rebleed the clutch or if i top of the master cylinder with new brake fluid. where could this fluid be leaking?

I had the same problem, all the fluid leaked out and ran down the inside of the firewall. Had to get a new slave cylinder. Didn't notice it until i pulled the floor mat out and saw the carpet was soaked. Good Luck

Hi,

If you're really lucky, the Master cylinder has leaked down into the fuse-block. This has happened to me 4 times on my 1988, and I recommend taking apart the fuse block and cleaning it with electrical contact cleaner if there is ANY indication of the brake fluid on it.

As far as the clutch problem, if your Master cylinder is dry or low it is most likely a leak in the lines. If it is full but no pressure is building up, might be time for a new Master or Slave Cylinder.

i have been refilling the master cylinder within 3 weeks.............. where is the master and Slave Cylinder? do i have to take out the whole transmission to replace any of these parts?

I found the master cylinder but what is this slave cylinder everybody is talking about? i dont really see any fluid leaked onto the fuse box or on the carpet but the rubber kinda looks wet but uncertain, obviously the fluid is leaking somewhere, i looked underneath the truck to see if i can see any leakage from the rods, but... no luck. i have rebleeded the clutch twice now, and figured out all i have to do is keep refilling that master cylinder. as i press the clutch pedal should i see any leaking coming out of the master cylinder? i heard my friend was telling me the leak might be inside the transmission? some hydraulic thing? have any clue what he might be talking about?

the master is where you add fluid. Look around the fire wall if you see no fluid inside the jeep at the fire wall and none outside under the hood at the fire wall it will be your slave or a line. To check the line just follow them down and see if they are wet. If not it is the slave. Bummer man. In that case crawl under the jeep and you should find fluid or sings of fluid between the transmission and bell houseing. If that is the case go ahead and buy a new clutch pressure plate and slave cylinder and replace em all at the same time. Cause your going to have the transmission and transfer case out soon. Might as well go ahead and do the u joint to. I know it sucks but that is the way it goes. If memory serves your looking at 180 bucks for a slave at NAPA, Clutch will be something around 150 to 225 bucks plus labor unless you have a warm place to work and some good wrench sence about you. The hydraulic clutch slave (yours is internal type) is inside the bellhousing, it's where the clutch lines go to. It is what engages the clutch. You should notice some fluid on the ground in the area of the bellhousing, or a wet area where the dust shield bolts to the bellhousing behind the oil pan.

You have to drop the transmission to replace the clutch slave, so might as well replace the clutch and turn thr flywheel while it's out.

HEY!!!!!!!! good news i smell the dot 3 brake fluid on the carpet, so......... it must be my master cylinder. any tips on how to replace this bad boy? i have the haynes book, but any other tips would be greatly appreciate
