Yeah, GMRS are the radios that you can buy anywhere. I bought mine for $7 in the bargain bin at Lowe's. The handheld CBs vary. Some are just channel 9 (emergency channel) and 19 (trucker's channel). Some are 40 channel. Yeah, they are the same frequency as the dash mounted CB.

Oops, that's right! It was the old bag and permanently installed cell phones that were 3 watts... been a while

Yeah, seems I remember having that conversation last summer with you, right around the time I bought mine! Seems I even remember posting spec sheets for them, as well as FCC regs! Sorry, couldn't resist!

RE: Re: RE: Beans or no beans in Chilli?

Twisted what does this mean? an ungrounded antenna? I wondered. I installed a handheld cobra 75 last year in my jeep. I got a firestick too 4.5 feet. I didn't permanently affix the antenna yet, just stuck it through a hole already in the side frame of the jeep. I got coiled antenna cable too. I'm a mess. I knew the coil needed to go, but I don't know how? I don't know where to permanently affix the antenna either or if it really makes a difference that I've got it just stuck into a hole on the side of the jeep. So is that what grounding does?

I can get weather c hannels, the cop channel, and some trucker channels. I've never gotten to use it on trails yet. I think it will work. It's real loud and easy to hold and use. Just wondered about those things though.

I read and read on this topic when I bought mine but really don't understand it all. Maybe someday.

Here's a short version...

An ungrounded antenna has no reference to the vehicle ground. Without this ground the performance of the radio's transmit and receive functions are greatly hindered. Continuous transmitter use can damage the radio. You can receive all you want without damaging the radio, but transmitting on an ungrounded antenna can and will cause high SWR readings.

Although there are antennas manufactured for fiber glass or aluminium body vehicles that do not use a normal grounding mount because of the poor or nonexistant potential. Most Jeeps have a metal (steel) body from factory therefore your Firestick should work well for you, once you choose mounting location.

Mounting locations can vary on how you plan to use it. Personally if the roof of my vehicle is metal, I drill a hole in the roof. The higher on the vehicle the better, but if you trail ride the roof top is not a good idea. You might opt for a location like the spare tire mount, spare tire bump stop, or rear bumper. Just remember the performance will change the lower you go on the vehicle. So go higher if your are an everyday chicken band user needin' a long distant 'smokie report' or lower will work for the occasional trail ride or Jeep function that's usually in close proximity. Just be sure to have the SWR checked before doing alot of long transmissions.

Here is a good site to chekout.

And this site, look at the headings under CB & Ham Radio.

I had mine mounted on the light bar, and used a little bungy cord to hold it down to the windshield tie-down loop on the hood, so that I could get in and out of the garage. It worked well up there and looked cool, but when it came to trees or the garage door, it was a pain in the butt. So that's why I moved it to the tire stop. Still works pretty dang good, I just can't hear it.....Ya either mount it with the speaker going into the dash, or pointed at the floor. Yeah, if I had an overhead console, the speaker would be in the right place, but I don't and it ain't.

RE: Clutch Question

I live on my CB and depend on it very much! I run a Cobra 29 night watch with a little work done to make it a bit more suited for me. I had a Turbo Board installed, Galaxy Finals, Road King 56 mic and green LED behind the gauge to make the everything match and ez on the eyes and an external mounted speaker above my head so I can hear over the truck noise. I also Run a heavy Coil Monkey Made stick mounted on the drivers side mirror. I also have a little 450 watt booster box for them days when you just have to talk over the other knot heads out there.

For a Jeep set up that would be a little much. Any mid line cobra, uniden, or other brand with a 3 foot fire stick is plenty radio for the off road. I like the 3 foot glass whip so it does not hit every tree limb on the trail. Also envest in a cb external speaker mount it over your driver seat on the rool bar faceing down so you can hear the dang thing. I threw out the ash tray and mounted mine there in my yj. mounted the whip passenger side at the back corrner of the body. Seemed to work great. Good luck with yours tug

Ya, i've got a few of those on my mirrors too. Them monkeys sure can make some good sticks, but you aint seen nothing till you try the chimpanzee-made sticks

But seriosly, what is that?

Sounds like a pretty sweet setup, but of course you'd need it being on the road so much.

If the base of the antenna is secured to a metal part of the body, then it is already grounded and you should be fine ;)

maybe someone in your 4x4 club may have an swr meter and you could have him/her tue your antenna. It only takes a few minutes and is really EZ

Wow man we were both wrong. It's 4 watts(12 watts for a single side band when in that mode). Like I said it's been a while. I havent' touched one in at least ten years. Any one you buy from a major manuf. will put out the max though.

Look it up... and note - although wrong, I was CLOSER

Never have used one of the handheld 40 channel jobs you see at radio shack and the like. Anybody ever used them? I would think it would have a limited transmit distance but would be great for a trail.
I had one for a couple of years, it worked great. It had the same output rating as a regular dash mounted CB. You can unattach the antenna and plug it into a regular antenna attached to your jeep. This makes it great for both in the jeep and other things like camping, fishing.....whatever.
Since they got stolen, I decided to go with a Cobra which has everything built into the mic(can't remember the model number). This way I unattach the mic and take everything with me.

RE: Clutch Question

Craig that is the model I have where everything is in the mic and I unattach it and lock it up in the Jeep console. It's the cobra 75. Thanks for all the tips twisted and mike and everyone. I am gonna copy this stuff off and look into it more. Good idea bout the meter too, Harry. :)
