Just wondering if a chevy 305/700r4 trans out of a camero is a good swap for my cj7 build. not sure on the year yet he claims it's post 85 but I need to get some numbers off it and try to confirm the year. Motor is fuel injected and he said they have around 80,000 miles on it. He's asking $500 for both. What do. Guys think.

Trans is 2wd. You can convert it but it's cheaper to find a 4wd one.

the 80's 305 is not really worth it, 2 bolt mains, notoriously bad flowing heads, really low on power and torque. in one of my old trucks, I polished a 79 305 as much as I possibly could.. 335 sstroker, aluminum heads, intake, tuned carb, headers, free flowing exhuast.. you getm the best I ever made was 250 hp to the rear wheels. in the end, it was way too much money fo rhte small power gains. if the price is free, you can use the 305 to get everything in, then swap to a different SBC down the road.

Might I suggest looking for a amc motor.. like a 360 or 401.

360's are little better than the 305, should be a near bolt in application depending on the motor you jeep originally had. and if you can find a 401, stupid amounts of power stock.

I agree I passed on both the 305 & the 700trans. After doing more research at Novak I didn't realize the mods involved w/using a 2wd trans for a 4x4. I have a line on a 700trans out of a 92 chevy 4x4 at the local auto yard for $550 w/ a 30 day warranty. He says it has around 80,000 on it. It's not that I don't believe him but, 550$ seems a little pricey. What do u guys think? Also, I've decided to look for the motor I really want which is a sbc350. Now I just need to decide fuel injection or not. Is hooking up fuel injection a tough task if youve never done it before? So the search continues.

Personally I would never pay more than $150 for a used 700R4 transmission ever. and a 30 day warranty is just a shade better than a tail light warranty... I'll warranty is until I no longer see your tail lights.

the junk yard proabbly fills the trans full of Bars Leaks and hope they don't see you for a couple weeks.

700R4 is a great trans, find one for about $100-150, find a reputable shop to perform a bench rebuild for about $400-500, most shops will offer a 3 year 36K mile warranty,

if you buy a kit designed for adapting EFI into a different chassis, it is very easy, but very expensive. if you have zero experience pinning out EFI harnesses, I would not suggest doing it alone. basically you need the vehicle you have and the vehicle the motor came froms pinn chart and then you litterally add, move, or remove wires based on the new ECM harness.

EFI swaps are not cheap, but probably the best one you could do.

Wow that's a lot to take in. Don't get me wrong it's very helpful and informative. Thanks for the info. Looks like I need to do some more research.
