cj steering!

everyone knows that the cj's steering is notorious for sucking. I am not sure if there is already a thread on this or not, but has anyone figured out how to improve the steering significantly? I already have a pro comp stabilizer and power steering(oem I think). any other thought on what I could do?

I would add a power steering brace.,a cooler and royal purple. to keep it cool.

What's wrong with your steering? Every CJ steering problem I've ever seen has been due to worn or loose parts. Get under it & see if you have movement of the linkage without moving the steering wheel...then track down where that movement is. The lower steering shaft is prone to wear. Also verify that thebolts are tight on the steering box & brackets. Hope that helps....let us know what you find.

When 'Betty's Saginaw box started leaking I took 'er into a local shop with an HD steering brace and HD pitman arm to add on. When I got 'er back she behaves on the street like a sedan.

The steering box brace was the best thing I ever added to my CJ! Double check for the worn and loose also.

yah I got a boot tear, I just havent gotten around to it yet. but can you post a picture of how your brace looks and is set up just so that i know where to put it when/if I get it.

I'll try to get some pics this weekend. The brace has a round part that clamp's around the steering box and a tube that goes to the other side of the frame (passenger side) and bolt's to the spring hanger. I used to brake steering box mount's all the time until I got one of these.

Sweetpeet,
Do you have manual steering? 74cj5 jeeps from the factory came with manual steering. If you running bigger tires you should consider upgrading to power steering. This would make a huge difference and almost a must if your doing much off roading with it. I can't believe I ran 36" tires at one time with manual steering. Least I had one of those trailer truck sized steering wheels. Hah

To me, power steering is just another thing to go wrong. I mean, yeah manual takes more muscle, but, for me, it has the accuracy, and desirable dependability. Of course, I don't have huge tires either.

Steering really shouldn't be that difficult. Agr makes some nice steering box's and pumps that allows for quicker turning. If you do have power steering a smaller steering wheel I like better. Tilt wheel for different wheel positioning, maybe something also you could try and see if it feels any better. Good luck.
