CJ transfer case grinding (!)

So my transfer case makes a god-awful grinding noise when shifting past N back to 2H? I took the jeep out this weekend and I have no trouble moving from 2H to 4H and back but when I have to shift through Neutral, I get a nasty grind when trying to move back into gear. It's a Dana 300 and an '83 CJ7.

What causes the grinding? Am I doing something wrong? I normally have the (automatic, by the way) transmission in neutral when shifting the T-case.

Many thanks,
Jay

Some gear driven cases just do that, especilly behind autos. Turn the engine off and then shift into gear. It will drop in easily. If you don't want to cut it off, try shifting with the transmission in neutral and the Jeep at a slow roll.

I have a grinding D300 as well. Nothing to be worried about. Try not to force it in, just apply gentle pressure until it drops in, it will also work better if you do what redrooster suggested about shifting at a slow roll, I believe this is what the owner's manual suggests as well.

i got towed, now why wasn't it moving itself?

Unless impossible, I try to shift during a slow roll. Maybe I noticed it so much the last time because I was at a complete stop.

Thanks for the help, guys.
