Clunking noise when braking

RE: I just bought me a 2002 jeep wrangler 4.0l

I have a '94 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with an intermittent braking problem. When coming to a stop, either soft or hard, there will occasionally be a loud clunking noise coming from the rear as though I've rolled over a large stone....it's a noise as well as something felt cause it's enough to make you look in the rearview mirror to see what you ran over. Also, I have another intermittent problem that may be related to the first as it's when I'm braking. I have a descending hill for a driveway and occasionally when descending and braking the brakes will feel like they are slipping or catching on something and/or grinding and I feel as though I may not stop in time and would therefore run into the garage door. Any clues?

Re: RE: Stuck line truck

yank the wheels and check for loose bolts, especially on the calipers... If they are loose, they will shift when braking causing a noticeable clunk. Also look for loose suspension bolts. Check that the calipers are moving freely too.

I have a 95 GC and get a similar clunk when stopping. But with mine it is consistant at 15 mph as I am braking. what I mean is as I am braking I can watch the speedometer and as it passes 15 it clunks. Its as if it is when it is downshifting into first gear. No one seems to know what the problem is with mine, check and see if yours is consistant with a certain speed too...

RE: Re: RE: BFG All Terrain T/A KO - Black out or White out?

jack it up, take the wheels off, and have a look in there on both sides. i got pebbles lodged in there from trail rides before, that was enough to kill the rotors and pads. if that is your problem, replace them immediately, unless you wanna replace the calipers as well. while i realize this might not be the issue, taking the rear wheels off and taking a closer look in there cant hurt. and if you dont see anything, torque everything down real good, and see if the problem ends.

Sounds like you might want to have that transmission checked out....

Check your driveline's u-joints too. Jack up the rear and put it in neutral. Grab the driveline and try to wiggle it near the joints.

yeah i was gonna say transmission mounts or something like that.

ya, and transmission and t-case mounts too. Anything like that could "clunk" if they're bolts are loose.

Even when the transmission shifts down, it could jolt anything like that if it's loose...causing the noise you hear.
