clunking noise?

Hey I have a 95 zj 5.2L v8 w/ the all wheel drive and as I am slowing down I am hearing this clunk at 15 mph like clockwork! I was just wondering what this clunk is and has anyone else had this problem. Any help would be great. Thanks

Sounds like your front track bar or a front control arm is loose. Make sure all is very tight.

just for S&G have you checked the transmission fluid level? the clunk could be the transmission downshifting into 1st or second... if its going into first its too fast and could clunk. just my .02

All fluids are fine. but you are right, it does sound like its doing it when its downshifting into 1st. but i dont think its the transmission, or I hope its not. everyone says those things are bullet proof, and good for a couple hundred thou. miles. And I just hit the Big 100 mark. Could there be a problem in the transfer case? Its like something is wearing out or has some slop or play in it? Is this a common problem with the all-time 4wd? Thanks, I'll be checking back...

you have the quadra-trac? it is possible, but unlikely the axles or driveshafts only because it would make noise accelerating as well... is it a metallic clunk or more of a thud? do you have to be going over a certain speed before it will do it or can you accelerate to like 25 and get it to do it?

Yeah it sounds mechanical, and sometimes you can actually feel it. It sounds/feels like its right under the front seats.

well that would definitely put it at the t-case or transmission.. which tcase do you have? can you run it in 2wd or is it the quadra trac? also, do you have 4high full time vs part time? if you have both, try both and see if it changes (on dirt of course)

Whats up,I had a 94 grand with a similar prob. When you say its like clockwork does it sound like a metal clunk and when the wheels are slowy turning it kinda sounds like your brake pads are bindidng in the rear.I had this weird a$$ problem with mine and it took some time to find it.It ended up being the rear axle.I am a 7 year mechanic and do this out of the home now but i looked over it alot of times even went as far to take it too a few freinds. No one new what it was .I finally heard one freind that for some reason the chrysler axles make the sound if you havent changed the axles fluid. So i tried it on mine.I took it all apart cleaned it out with a couple cans of brake cleaner ,let it air dry for about 20 min .and wiped it all out. When i put everything back together and filled it it got alot quieter and after a few days of driving it stopped.I didnt understand why but the was no metal shavings or nothing in it.hope that helps

i have a 91 jeep cherokee, it does the same thing. i have narrowed it down the being a suspension problem. my rear springs sag and when i stop the axle is twisting, and when i take off it is twisting back. hopefully after i rebuild the rear spring it will stop. some time it feel like i got rear ended if i stop to suddenly
