Comparing 2.5 litre TJ to 4.0 re: off-roading, performance

RE: some questions about gear

What does anyone think about the difference between 2.5 litre and 4.0 TJ? I have heard mostly that the 2.5 (mine) is not so hot, e.g., engines blow up, not enough torque, wussy off-road  . I have also heard though that the 4:10 gearing makes them better for off-roading. I know I have trouble keeping up with mom and the V6 mini-van, but I have air intake, throttle spacer and it hauls pretty good when you punch (I never did expect it to be like my Acura GS-R!). :?:

Well I've owned both a 4.0 and a 2.5 (both YJ's not TJ's) and loved them both, but I have to say that I really like the 2.5. Both jeeps were pretty stock but I have much better gas mileage with my 2.5 and have had absolutely no problems getting where I need/want to go offroad with the 2.5. Yes, top speed is probably less, but I really don't feel the need to be going more than 75 mph in the jeep! If it works and you like it, run with it and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

The 2.5l gets some undeserved crap slung it's way. It will never be a 4.0, but it's a decent engine. Keep the rpms up and the weight down, and life with a 2.5 is easier.

The 4 banger is a great off road motor! If you are going to go all wild and hit the mud deep and gooey fast and hard then it may not be for you. If you are going to crawl around in the woods and pick you lines and drive like you are in no big hurry the little giant will take you anywhere you need to go. For my style of trail riding it is the engin of choice. It will go real slow over the rough stuff and still pull like a champ. Now if your a little peppy with you drive side the six may be more for you.

Just get out there and wheel. See for yourself if the 4 banger is for you or not. In the low gears in low range you will think you have a monster under the hood! Best of luck in your choice. Plus the 4 banger with an opened up exaust sounds so much better than the six. tug

That can be said for the 2.5, the 4.0, or the 4.2 when you get tires that are big and then don't re-gear - and most any other vehicle/drivetrain combo with a stock drivetrain and bigger meats.
