Cooling Fan problems, 95 Cherokee

I went to my local Jeep dealership the other day, because my coolant fan was staying on (sometimes for hours) after I turned my car off. I wasn't sure if it was an electrical problem, or something with the thermostat, or what. They charged me $130 for a diagnostic, and told me that nothing was wrong. But the next morning my battery was dead. Which leads me to believe that there is something wrong.

Basically the fan is turning on when it hits a certain temp, but is not turning off when it crosses back below that temp (i think). maybe a problem with the temp sensor/guage.

Is this an easy problem to fix? I don't do a lot of work personally on my car, so I'll probably have to take it in. But, if I can replace/fix it myself I would. [addsig]

I would add a toggle switch under the dash to kill all power to it when it is parked. You would have to find the main positive power line going to power up the fan and splice in a line to the switch and back should not be a very coplacated deal. tug[addsig]

Hi. Sounds like a stuck fan relay. Very easy fix. The relay should be somewhere on the front driver's side under the hood. If the fan gets stuck on again, try tapping something against the relay and see if the fan stops, if so the relay is bad. If you add a switch be sure you don't forget to turn that fan on while using the A/C. Could cause damage.

Could I solve the problem, without adding a switch, by just changing the sender on the front of the engine???[addsig]

Yes, you most certainly can solve the problem without adding a switch. But Why change the sender? The Temp Sender (and or the ECU) only has the power to turn on the fan if the ignition switch is in the RUN or START positions. The relay has the final say whether the fan will be on or not. So there should be no way the fan could be running with the ignition OFF unless A) the relay is stuck on or B) there is a short in the wiring. Test the relay, it is an easy, simple fix. Then move on to move involved testing if need be.

Good Luck

No Problem... glad to hear it worked out for you :-D . I'd try to get some of my money back from that dealership though, can't believe they'd overlook that :-O.
