Hi. My nephew has a 90 YJ that wont stay running. It will start and run for one trip to school or the store, and when he comes out it wont start. The dealer shop says something is making the fuel pumps go bad.....they have put three on and the same thing keeps happening. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? please email any suggestions....its a cool ride, if only he could drive it...Thanks

RE: pneumonia

if you take it back to the dealer, tell them to check the crank position sensor (CPS). it seems to be a common problem - causes intermittent starts - runs fine, then won't start, then runs fine, then won't start. Read a thread where 3 different dealerships couldn't find the problem, then the jeep was taken to the local "Jeep guru" who diagnosed it as the CPS - problem solved.

not the crank position sensor

just tried replacing my cps. didnt work on mine. let me know what else you have tried and what happens.

Wrenching today

that was also a thought, but with only one to choose from in a 70 mile radius, kinda makes the pickins slim..........he will try the cps, ill pass along results...thanks for the imput

Re: newbie questions

About 6 months ago, I had the exact same problem with my 91 YJ. Multiple fuel pumps and entire sending units replaced, jeep would run for a maybe a day and would just stop working. Cause...they were all being fouled because the inside of the tank was coming apart. Now the tanks are plastic but the inside of mine was essentially peeling apart, so even though they cleaned out the inside of the tank when replacing the pump, the process of putting the tank back on and filling it broke loose some plastic pieces. Now after having a new tank, entire sending unit and filter replaced the fuel system was not grounded correctly and still causing problems so the mechanic regrounded it and all was good again. Hope this helps. Also, if it dies again before getting it fixed, one solution that worked at least to get it started to get home was to shake the crap out of the jeep which presumably loosened up some large plastic pieces that were stopping the fuel pump from getting fuel. Good luck.

I had a similar problem a while ago. My gas tank was getting bowed up on the bottom, like a coke bottle left out during the night will suck in the bottle a little. Well, the bow in the tank was blocking a return line, and my fuel pump was pushing out around 60 psi of fuel, instead of 30-35. The extra pressure was trying to return to the tank, and the bow in it caused a back pressure in my lines, and gave me a royal PITA. Hope this makes some sense, and I hope you get it fixed.

RE: soft top advice

I had this probelm too but what happened to me was... there was a wire for fuel pump that would go down in front of the valve cover in a wiring harness, the wire was poking out ever so slightly and after years of use, the sheathing wore away, and would ground out the fuel pump and pop the maxi fuse. Took me two dropped tanks, 6 maxi fuses and about a week to figure it out.
