Death Row

:xI can see five or six nice Cherokees and Grands sitting in the Cash for Clunkers section of an auto dealer I pass every day on my way to work. The Jeeps, along with all of the other vehicles in the C4C section, are waiting on Death Row to have their engines destroyed before they go to the junk yard.:x -John

makes you sick huh? I know that it does me! all that beautiful not rusted sheet metal; between all the XJs and the like-brand-new '91-93 Dodge D 150 that I know of with <50K original miles that was stupid assedly turned in, I feel a need to PUKE. especially that there are now more Toyotas and Hyundais on the road.
Thye will be prying my cold dead fingers off the steering wheel before I buy a FWD go cart! RWD/4WD is the ONLY way to go! what's real bad is that some of these, even the carb'd V8s got VERY respectable MPGs even for todays standards! My 81 W 150 with a 4 bbl 318 got 22 MPG on the road!! as did my 87 B 250 window van; another carb'd 318. yet my 2.5 equipped 93 Wrangler got about 19 on the road.

Yes, many of the turn-ins looked really nice. Sure, there were some tired, rusted out vehicles but there were many nice looking 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks, nice minivans, SUV's, and of course, the Jeeps. What a waste. The two Cherokees that were up close to the road had no visible rust and were really nice. There were a couple of Grands sitting in there that had fogged head lights but otherwise looked great. :x
I heard that some of the dealers took in a few non-conforming vehicles during the mad rush to sell cars. These can be resold as used cars to recover some of the money lost. We can hope that a few of the nice ones will get resold. - John

I heard the same about re-sells, basically because they are not getting reimbursed for the 4500, so the dealership will try to sell them for probably more than they are worth.

Even the ones that do get the engines seazed, the body's and interiors are stripped and as many parts as possible get re-sold and what doesn't goes to the junk yard so people like me pick them clean.

Ya around here they're sending the rigs to the wrecking yards, which is totally fine with me!!

Most of the wrecking yards I go to are now back to being fully stocked:D

Some of these dont make sense to me. Most wranglers are worth more than the 4500 that was offered.
Makes me want to puck.

I've only heard of two Wranglers so far that were destroyed (they seize the engines before sending to the scrap yard). The problem is that a Jeep with a private sale value of 5000 or 6000 or maybe even more only has a trade in value of like 3700 or 4000 (these numbers are on-the-fly made up numbers). If you look some Jeeps up in Kelly Blue Book you'll see what the numbers do. So a Jeep with a "street value" of 6000 might well have been given the axe because of its trade in value. The Jeep hobby has lost a lot of nice Jeeps. - John
