Differential service

I recently had some work done on my front differential. A day or so after I got my Jeep back I took a peek and was somewhat surprised that it appears they used a sealant to replace what I guess was a gasket . The sealant is squeezed out all around the unit. I would have thought there was a specific gasket. Is this a problem or just a lazy mechanic or no problem ?

Depending on what axles you have, Most of the covers on the axles are sealed with an AXLE RTV. I'ts rare nowadays to find an axle diff. cover that has an actual gasket especially on a Jeep.. The RTV should not affect the function of the axle so as long as it's in moderation.

Every diff I ever saw had RTV sealant.I am kind of surprised they did not wipe off the extra sealant.I personally have it on my diff and my valve covers. No leaks so far.

That stuff is great. Once you change fluid or service your axle again, the silicone or whatever it is just peels right off. It's a lot easier than picking off an overzealous paper gasket.

No leaks for me, either. I use Permatex Blue RTV.
