In Denver last year, there was a case of an illegal that killed a police officer. He ran to Mexico.
There his Grandmother turned him in both in Mexico and again in Colorado.
Mexico was reluctant to extradite him. The reason was the sentence that he might receive. If he was to get death, they would not extradite him. We made agreements that he woiuld not receive the death sentence. You may remember the case, as he worked in one of Mayor Hickenlooper's restaurants (before he divested himself of them prior to political office).
So, they did extradite him. He is awaiting trial (without bond) at this time.
So, it happens both ways.
As to the drug war? If the drug offenders were removed from the court system, there would be a lot more room in our federal prison system...

This might have been the case, but this is certainly the exception and not the rule. Most perps flee to Mexico because the chances of them being caught and extradited are slim and none.
