Driveshaft Vibration

Hey how's it going? I just put a 4" lift and 31"s on my 95 YJ and am experencing some driveshaft vibration inbetween 30 and 40 mph. Any other speed is fine. Everything is stock pretty much (axels, steering components (cept for a drop pitman)). The lift I got from Skyjacker has degree shims in the back and it said you probably wont need to lower the case in the instructions. BTW this is a very daily driver (I'm a pizza delivery guy so I need it to be operable) Anyway I want to know if it would be worth it to lower the transfer case or just save for a while and get a slip yoke kit and a cv driveshaft for the rear (the front is fine). I have heard that lowering the case is a pain cuz it messes up all your shift linkages and stuff. I want to go the cv route but I just dont have to $$$ right now to do it. What do you guys think?[addsig]

I'm surprised they said you wouldn't need to lower the t-case, I've seen 2 1/2" YJ lift kits come with t-case drops..

you definatly describe drive line vibes... If you drop the t-case I wouldn't worry too much about the linkage, it's not much of a problem on YJs since none of the brackets attach to the body and they all get lowered together.

Another possibility for stopping the vibrations would be to add a 1" body lift, and a 1" motor mount lift.[addsig]

I would get the t-case drop. Most drop kits are only about $30 or less and it's not hard to do on a YJ. Your shifter doesn't even touch the body of the Jeep. You may need to do some trimming under the shift boot for the transfer case shifter, but that's it. A good pair of sheet metal snips would take care of that. Then you can have 0 vibration for cheap, and when you get your cv shaft and slip-yoke, you can remove it. It's not hard to do. Good luck, and let us know what you decide to do.

Good idea, I may just go with the drop for now since I won't have to worry about the linkages and stuff. Tell me one thing though, is it wise to make your own? I've heard you can make them out of some pipe that is just larger than the bolts and some longer bolts and washers. Call me cheap, but I really don't feel like spending $40 on something as simple as this and that I may not need for that long anyway.[addsig]

Make your own, it's not hard, and it's rediculous to pay $40 for a couple pieces of pipe. And if you can make something then don't ever buy it, just put that $40 toward something you need that you can't make.

I guess, you could take yellowYJ's advice and make them yourself. But here's my outlook, my YJ is also a daily driver and I love my Jeep more than most things in this world... I'm not gonna cheap out on $40 just to realize that if I do something wrong to my homemade setup it could have severe consequences to the driveline. So don't go out to lunch or dinner 5 times this month... there's your $40. [addsig]

Well I just got done lowering the case today and man did it ever make a huge difference!!! I guess I didn't realize just how bad the vibration was. I did go ahead and make my own...I bought some longer bolts from the hardware store as well as washers and six 1/2 x 1" long pipe fittings. I loosened the bushing bolts for the transmission in the middle of the shield and then supported it with a jack and took out all six bolts. I then put my spacers in (basically a fitting with a washer on top and bottom of it) in between the shield and frame and then ran the bolts through them. It worked quite well. I did not have to cut my floor (thankfully...I was dreading that part) and it shifts through all gears (manual transmission) and 4 hi and low just fine. The only drawback is the fact that my shifter is a little lower in the floor now (I get used to it I guess). In total I lowered it about 1 1/4 inches. My jeep runs so much better now! I thought the sluggeshness was the 4 banger and the bigger tires but now its back to its old peppy self again (yay!). Total cost: about $10 for all the hardware. Thanks for the advice guys, its great now! I'll take some pics and scan them so you can see it.[addsig]
