Electric fans?? what to use?

So, next on my list of mods is to put and electric fan in my '89 YJ 4banger. I'm about to take a trip to the junkyard to try and find one, since to I can't find a new one for under $100 anywhere. Now, I know that the most common fan grabed out of the junkyard for my jeep in an old taurus fan, but I was wondering if there was any other vehicles that I could grab the fan out of that would work just as well. Any insight on this would be great. Thanks

oh yea, and on a side note.. I had a question from my father. On his 200? TJ, he's got 140,000 miles(he uses it for work everyday, he's a rual postman, basically get paid to offroad all day:) ), and he's never had to replace the rear brake shoes. I guess he keeps maually adjusting them(with the star wheel) and they will work fine, but then by the next day it's like he never did anything!? Any thoughts on this would help him out alot, thanks guys.
 

Tell your pops that they are self adjusting. He probably needs new shoes and drums.
 
I have been trying to figure out which electric fans the H1 Hummers use, they seem very resistant to water. I have used minivan and Taurus fans before but they do not tollerate water crossings. As long as you stay out of water a lot of fans should work.

That's what told him before, but he said that the shoes aren't wearing at all
:? And he goes thru the pads on his front brakes like crazy he says.

ms018kmf, I guess I'll keep doing some research, we have quite a bit of water crossings here in upstate NY.
 

Use a Ford Taurus fan, found on mid '90s Ford Taurus, Lincoln Mark VII, and similar cars with the 3.8L v6. There are a ton of web writeups if you google "Taurus fan swap". It's a 2speed fan that bolted easily to my 2.5L YJ radiator. I only use low speed, cools my engine just fine.

Thanks, I'm going to try and get to the junkyard today. Hopefully they'll have one of those lying around.
 
Regardless of the fan you decide on (I spent the $$$ for the Flex-a-Lite), hook it up through a relay, and have a dash mounted switch to turn it on or off through the relay for water crossings. Pretty easy to do, even for an electrically challenged old fart like me. ;)
 
Well I was going to take a trip out there today, but mother nature decided to bless my neck of the woods with F****** snow, snow on April 15th. This is ridiculous!! I want to get my soft top on..

When I got mine, I found 3 of them the same day (all of them were already removed), so I got to pick the best one... The easiest way to identify the fan is
1. Look for the single fan version (some Taurus have dual fans)
2. Look for the one with 3 cables, not 2!
3. You may be able to see the motor; if you do, you may see the Philips logo on it (out of the 3 I found, you could only see the Philip logo on one).

Mine was $28.88, and after cleaning it up, it looked like new... Just remember to test the fan and make sure it works!

The fan?

1. It moves more volume than the stock fan (especially at low RPM's, as the stock fan relies on engine RPM's to turn the fan while the electric one can turn at full power regardless of engine RPM's), so it keeps the engine cool under extreme conditions (like when rock crawling, for example).
2. Because the stock fan moves with the engine, the higher the RPM's, the more air it is blowing. Hence, the higher the RPM, the more horsepower it "steals" from the engine to turn the fan.
3. Because at highway speed, the air coming through the grill is more than the fan could move anyway, the electric fan can be turned off, increasing fuel economy and horsepower going to the wheels.
4. The electric fan can be wired in such a way that it will only turn on when the engine reaches a certain temperature. In fact, with a controller like the http://www.dccontrol.com you can even have variable speeds so that as the temp rises, so does the airflow (but only as needed), and as the temp drops back down, the fan can slow down or shut down completely (this is more efficient than a constat turning fan)
5. You can turn the fan off for river crossings, avoiding damage to the fan and fan blades.
6. It's just another cool, cheap mod you can do to your Jeep! (like this one all by itself was not enough!)

It is important to note that the fan will NOT add horse power to your engine; but it will free up horse power that was used for other applications (in this case, turning the fan). This freed up horsepower can be used for other purposes (supercharger anyone?), like turning the wheels!

In the cae of the 2.5L, it will also free up a ton of space in the engine compartment, as the shroud of this fan is about 25% the width of the original shroud (but it's not like you could use that space anyway, so I am not counting this as an advantage).

By the way, does anyone know the optimum operating temperature for the 2.5L engine? I want to set my controller to maintain that temperature, but have been unable to find this data...

Every source and every person I have talked to indicates that 210 degrees (f) is the standard operating temperature for the 2.5. That's where mine ran before I installed my electric fan, and I have set the electric fan's thermostat at 210. It runs perfectly at that temp. As far as what is the optimum temp, I don't really know, but I would assume it's 210, as that's where the 2.5 runs even after multiple engine mods (according to those I've talked to that have modded their 2.5's for more power).
