Engine identification

does anyone know how to identify an engine. on the right side of my engine in between cylinders 2 and 3 there is a tag that says 705 E 31. I'm pretty sure that he means it's a 232, but I'm trying to find out what year.

What I found indicate you have a 65 or 74 232 built on may 31.

The engine code is stamped on a pad on the right side of the block, just ahead of the distributor. It beaks down like this:
A- 258 1 bbl (71-79)
B- 258 1 bbl Low Compression (71-74, Jeep ONLY)
C- 258 2 bbl (4.2L, 76-89)
E- 232 1 bbl (70-79)
F- 232 1 bbl Low Compression (71-74, Jeep ONLY)
G- 232 2 bbl (70-74)
L- 232 1 or 2 bbl (68-69)

1, Year built code. 2 & 3, Number of the month. 4, Engine size/type code. 5 & 6, Day built

Thus, "409C21" indicates 1962, September, 258 , 21st day.

Day Built "Year Codes"
1=1959 2=1960 3=1961 4=1962 5=1963 6=1964 7=1965 8=1966 9=1967 1=1968 2=1969 3=1970 4=1971 5=1972 6=1973 7=1974 8=1975 9=1976 1=1977 2=1978 3=1979

Thanks. That helps alot. It is on a swamp buggy so I have no other ways of identification. Im thinking its a 74 since now I am looking the fireing order goes with a 72-74.

inline 6 cyls are the same firing order except early '50s IH. If the starter is driver's side (to a normal US vehicle) then it is '72 or older.
