88 wrangler 6 cyl 258 weber carb auto......The jeep runs rough in idle in park and gets worse in drive......It lacks power but no engine noise.....I have changed plugs, wires. dist cap, fuel filter, air filter.....Ive adjusted on the carb everyway possible.....I have advanced the timing, retarded the timing, still runs shitty......I have sprayed carb and starting fluid everywhere that there would be a vacuum leak and stilll nothing....So i started pulling plug wires off one at a time....I pulled the first one and the engine bogs down a bit so i put the wire back on.....pullled the second one and nothing happened....so i put it back and pulled the rest and they all bogged down like the first one....does this mean i have a cylinder laying down......DO I NEED A REBUILD!!!!!!....If you think i do what kind of rebuild????I don't know about engine rebuilding....I would appreciate any advice..... I just want to drive my Jeep Thanxs Mark

Is the distributor working properly? Do you actually have spark going to that cylinder?
Pop the valvecover and verify the valvetrain is functioning properly. A flat cam lobe or dead lifter will keep the valves from opening. If no fuel/air can enter, removing the spark will make no difference. Even extremely worn cylinders will fire if all components needed for combustion are present....unless you have severe damage, and you would already know about that.

Sorry i forgot to say that I pulled the valve cover off and and grounded the coil and cranked over the engine.....the valve train was all even and seem to be in good working order...The reason i started pulling plug wires is because i would run the engine for a while and pull the plugs and check them...i found that 1 and 3 thru six cylinders all looked like a bronze color(the way I think they are supposed to look)....the number two cylinder plug was wet like gas oil maybe.....a strong smell of gas........Now what do u think???? If I need to rebuild help me??? Thanxs again Mark

This could be something as simple as a bad plug, plug wire, dist. cap etc. so look at these first. Switch a known good plug into the cyl. thats dead & check the results. Then do the same with the plug wire. Check compression in this cyl. next. Report back you results.

Sounds like you may be haveing webber blues! Trade that ol carb for a motorcraft 2150. You will be glad you did. If you said ther was engin noise I would go a different direction but to me it sounds to much like a fule delivery thing.. tug

I took your advice and my jeep runs on all six cylinders. I changed plugs from a different cylinder and you was right i had a bad plug.....The weird thing is i just bought those plugs just a few weeks ago....Thats why I thought it wasnt that.

I will probably go with the Motor Craft carb....I live in a state where we don't have to have any of that emissions crap, is there any way to use this carb without using it????? If there is, can someone tell me how to hook up the vacuum without the smog crap??? Let me know.....

I just want to say thanks for all the advice.....Mark

my 86 has the exact same problem. happened when the "tech" at the emission testing place wouldnt listen to me when i toldhim not to go over 1800 rpm . he promptly went to 2400 and dumped the rings on that cylinder into the pan. im doing a rebuild on her.

.......is there any way to use this carb without using it?????

I for one have found the Weber carburetors to be very good door stops as long as it is not too windy; never found them to be much good for running a motor though.
