Exhaust leak

Im not trying to hijack your thread, but i think im having the same problem as you. Ever since I have put my hard top on my jeep, I have had an exhaust smell inside. I do have gaps in my worn old weather strip, but how do i check the engine for exhaust leaks? also my tail pipe comes out in front of my drivers rear tire.

thanks

Start it up and stuff a (clean) rag in the tailpipe, crawl underneath it and check for leaks. This is what I do when I am inspecting vehicles.

Do what hillbillyman said, only have someone dribble a little bit of ATF down the carb while revving the engine. It'll make a helluva lot of white smoke, but it'll be a fast way to pinpoint the leak. Plus, the ATF will clean out your carb, intake, and valves pretty good and safely.

Ditto! I did that once on a Chevy and the leak was quickly located.
