exhaust questions

Let me start by saying this is a great board. I have a couple of questions about my exhaust. Started fixing a bad leak, back stud on manifold broken, lucky me I have over the 8yrs and 80k miles. Also, when I pulled off the exhaust manifold there was no gasket anywhere. Is this the way it comes from the factory?? I've never seen or heard of no exhaust manifold gasket needed. Also, where the manifold hooks to the head pipe I expected to find a dougnut gasket, but nothing there either. I had purchased a doughnut gasket from the local dealer, but it is way off in size. I'm not the original owner of my '94 so I guess anything is possible. May be time to order the header and new exhaust now. :-D Are the Pacesetter systems anygood? I know Bolra is the best, but kinda pricey. Thanks in advance.[addsig]

it's not that unusual to find an exhaust manifold installed without a gasket. don't know off hand if that is the stock set-up for your year/motor. if the manifold is straight and it's mating surface is true, many builders prefer (from my experience) to not use an exhaust gasket due to the high heat and probability of deterioration and subsequent leakage.

i always use gaskets for what it's worth. . .

as for the head pipe/manifold joint, there should be a gasket there, a leaded/fiber doughnut.

sounds like your motor may have been apart, at least down to the short block, and reassembled questionably - no gaskets, broken stud, etc.

all easy fixes, just watch those knuckles. :-O

Thanks for the reply. I had found some other questionable things right after I purchased a year and a half ago. And that was just basic wiring. Guess I need to take the head off now and take to a machine shop and have broken stud removed. Will take a trip back to the dealer and let them know they sold me the wrong size doughnut. do you think you can get to that broken stud with a drill and an easy out? beats pulling the head.[addsig]

i put pacesetter on my 258 and it leaked. the hardware really could use some improvement. you get 1 inch maybe solid stock machined with bolt hole in middle and machined with a step so it contacts both exhaust and intake. it bottoms on intake before it tightens on exhaust. tried washers but finally took it back off and machined some material from it to allow me to tighten it fully before it bottomed out.[addsig]

pulling the head in a jeep is not too tough... but i don't think its worth it unless you have another reason to do so... if you just need to remove a bolt... I say a simple easy out jobber would do... but if it is unreachable... you might as well do some work on it while its out[addsig]

Check out the Flowmaster cat-back from Rusty's Offroad, only about $160. There was no donut gasket from the factory, don't know about the manifold gasket.[addsig]

Tried drilling out myself, but it's the back one so couldn't really get at it good. Machine shop only charging $20 to remove the broken one and replace the front one while we're at it. I wanted to check some of the other stuff out while the head is off. Might as well do it right so I don't have to do again for awhile. Thanks for the info on the Pacesetter stuff. Guess I'll go with the Borla and save the customizing for later. Thanks about the info on the donut gasket. And no, there is no factory exhaust manifold gasket. Thanks for all the info.[addsig]
