Frozen E Brake

So as u may or may not know, we have had a bit of snow and cold weather here in Oregon. Nothing at all like u east coasters are used to, but when these valley folk see an inch of snow... people start running into things and breaking out the chains. Anyway, I get in the jeep this morning, and our low temp for the night was about 15, and i try to back up, but cant go, its as if my ebrake is on, but its not. I try forward, nothing. Finally, I just apply a little force with the go pedal and BANG!!!! It backs right out. Anyone else ever experience this? It was a bit frightening at first.

Same thing happened to me yesterday. It was -10 and my ebrake froze on. I now park with it in gear and the wheels turned against the curb while it's cold.

yeah, it's happened to me before too. Tonight the ebrake lost a LOT of tension when I released it this evening. Does anyone know how to re-adjust the ebrake? I tried it the other day with a box wrench and a channel lock, but to no luck.

I always heard there was some trick like backing up slowly with the ebrake on... but i wouldnt trust the validity of that... I too need a tightened ebrake, but I need to have jeep do the recall on it.

you can adjust the screw in the drum through the adjuster hole... not too easy if you don't know what's goin on... might be best to remove the drum and look at it all.. and adjust it there... i don't have Ebrakes... never did... on any vehicle i've ever owned.. i've learned not to worry about it

On YJs, the e-brake is adjusted by the two bolts on the long piece of all-thread at the end of the e-brake cable coming from the pedal. If your nuts are seized (heehee) try PB or wd-40. Mine was so bad that I just cut the thing out and replace the cable.

In regards to adjusting your brakes by backing up, this is also true. But you only have it half right. If you move forward, brake, backward, brake, and do this 2 times, your brake shoes will adjust properly in the drum. But this only makes a small amount of change.

YJ's between 90-95 have a e-brake pedal recall. Get yours checked, and replaced, for free.

Are you sure your tires weren't frozen to the concrete? Happens to me quite often here in the northeast. I know it is not the ebrake cause I don't use it!

Hey hi_c, when you do the "forward, brake, reverse, brake" deal are you saying to brake with the ebrake or the standard brakes?

What exactly is this recall about? What part would they replace? I just replaced both rear ebrake cables when I swapped in the D44, would I be eligable? I too had to adjust the parking brake, Like hi_c said, there are 2 nuts, one of them locking the other into place. The thread will most likely be full of junk making it difficult to get the nuts moving. I took a wire brush and WD40 and a little patience, it came right off, well eventually.

I had a buddy get in the jeep and push the ebrake down while I was trying to roll it from underneath. If it rolled then I was under there making it tighter. I didn't do the forward back thing, I never heard of it... but I'm gonna do it today! Every little bit helps.

The recall is for the pedal and gear teeth on the inside of the tub. DC just figured out this past year that the ebrake can SUDDENLY disengage, causing your beloved jeep to turn into a 1/4 ton cannonball rolling down the street. Your best bet is to call the stealership and ask them if your vehicle is under a recall. They'll most likely ask for your vin number, so have it handy. It has nothing to do with the axles so I think you're safe joopin.

I looked under the frame for my ebrake nut and it's different from the picture. It looks like someone replaced it with a nut that has that waxy/plastic junk in it. Still not sure which brake to use with the "forward, reverse" deal. Maybe I'm just slow

GreenReaper,

do the forward brake reverse brake with your pedal. Both the pedal and the e-brake actuate the rear brakes. Only the pedal does it with hydraulics. It's in the Haynes manual. Look at the section regarding e-brake or brake bleeding. It's in there.

Thanks C. I wasn't sure if you were talking about recalibrating the ebrake lines or the pads on the drums. My bad. Yeah, I'm reading it rignt now.

the way i've done it is set the e-brake halfway, then backup (just enough to move is all you need) and jam on the brakes.. repeat about 2000 times...

Yea I never heard of an Ebrake freezing until someone mentioned it the other day, I live in the northeast and havent experienced this yet though. I also never new that gas could freeze until it happened to someone I know... but tires freezing to the pavement?!?! do you live on a wetland?

That recall is for a good reason. Mine released while I was picking up a Pizza and smacked an S-10. If that pickup hadn't been there it would have rolled into a pretty busy road. I have a dent in the tailgate as a result. I don't forget to put her in gear now . I got my recall notice about a month afterward, but I still haven't done it. A friend of mine had his YJ recall done and he said they adjusted his at no charge. I'll get around to it one of these days!
