fuel tank problem

I have a 1986 CJ 7, 258 5-speed. The problem is I get down to a little less that 1/2 tank of fuel and it starts to act like I am out of fuel. I then top it off with about 6 gallons and it runs fine. I dropped the fuel tank thinking something was wrong with the fuel pick-up, but that was in good shape. Anyone have a problem like this? Please email me or post here with any solutions. js4fn@aol.com
thanks

Changed the tank in my old YJ and had the same problem. Fill up needed to keep running and would have 5 gals left in the tank. Wish I could help you more but sold the jeep prior to the fix. I was always thinking the pick up was not set deep enough for the tank or else the pick up line was a floater. Good luck and if you find the problem I would be very interested in the out come. tug

It stalls. I carry a gallon of fuel with me. I put it in and it runs fine. I then top off the tank and there is no problem until I get to a less than half a tank and then it stalls again.

This may or may not be relevent but my 71 Olds did the same thing. Guage would read half and the engine would die. Add gas, everything was fine. It was not the pick up but the 'sock' filter was clogged. Put a new one on and works like a charm. I don't know if Jeeps have a tank filter or not but thought I'd throw that out there.

Thanks, I think you hit the nail right on!!! The screen was dirty. I removed it, put in an inline filter. Will have to wait and see. Thanks again ô¿ô

i recommend replacing the screen i the tank.. yoiu dont wanna suck junk from the tank intot he pump if you can help it.. you can clog the pump.

My 95 (4.0 I6) starts dying as soon as it hits the red marking (1/4 tank) . I "ran out of gas" on the way home a couple of weeks because I could not use the last couple of gallons in the tank. Is there a filter (screen) in the tank as well as an inline filter. I have already replaced the inline filter, but if it is not too expensive, I'd like to replace the sending unit and the screen in the tank.

the screen should be fairly cheap....if its a 95... there is no "sending unit" its a combo sender and fuel pump most likely.... just replace the screen....

Just want to let you all know that it was the screen that was bad. I havent replaced it yet, but I have gone to almost empty without stalling. I did put an inline filter right next to the fuel tank and I think that will do. Thanks all for your help. Jeep On :p !!!!!!

i should probably get into my tank some day... i'm sure it is dirty as heck in there... when i replaced my filter, the gas inside it was black

dropping the tank isnt very hard...there are about 6 nuts on the forward side of the gastank skid that have to com off, two addition straps and a couple of hose clamps for the fill tube...my best advise would be to drop the tank when it is some what empty...lol...makes it alot easyier.

You will need some help getting the tank down. It is kinda heavy when it is uner there even when it is near empty. Do any of you all know how to clean a fuel tank once it is off ? -Al

on cleaning out your tank...the best way I have found is to drop the tank drop a chain in there (dry tank) and roll it around the yard that knocks off all the rust. make sure you re-line it, and that linner is safe to use with alternative fuels. I used that method on my $cout one time. I dont know if that will work on a jeep for sure.......... but its an

well... its a plastic tank i believe... so the rust shouldn't be a problem

I recently took my tank out and just put it back in recently - I found it to be extremly easy -

There were no straps to mess with, just appx 6 bolts. 20 mins on the way out and 20 putting it back.
Contrary to my belief the straps simply fix it to a steel plate that wraps around the bottom and the side of the tank. It is the plate the is bolted to the undercarrige with the 6 or so bolts.

Caught me by surprise.

so something THAT simple has kept me from doing that for the past year.... i dropped the tank on a few vehicles before... it was NEVER fun.... you guys make it sound easy on the jeep.... but then again... i haven't found anything that was hard to work on on the jeep yet
